Turkey baster blowing

Once in a while I give my LR a blow with a turkey baster to clean off the detritis. Is this a good idea or am I just clouding up the water for nothing?

A great idea from another post: Place an in tank canister filter pump to help clear up the water. Keeps the detrius from settling back on the rock. A H.O.T. Magnum works well.

I 'baste' my rocks regularly and let the corals feast. The filter sock catches the remainder.

Doesn't that blow the sand all over? Or you don't have sand in your tank?

I have sugar sized oolitic sand, so it blows around real easy! But I gots the talent baby!!! I use an MJ1200 too, so it has a pretty good blast.

I use the mj1200 as well. Just aim it correctly and no problemo.

Pat

Doing so WILL feed the corals plus attaching a filter to suck up the rest of the free floating dietrus not caught by your skimmer.

I do this every 2-3 days.

Has any one considered using a Diatom Not only will you have a power wash with the return line, But a filter as well with the intake. I have used this method for years with a FW tank, and have also connected a gravel / suction hose to it to clean the gravel as well MAN the stuff it pulls out is AMAZING I don't think I would use it on a sand bed, however as a power wash & water polisher it's the cat's meow !

Whats your opinion

I use the turkey baster or a powerhead to blow everything off and let the filter sock catch free floating dietrus that goes down the overflow.

Most of the time I use a shop vac to suck up large piles of any debris that accumilate on the bottom since my tank is BB

A lot of the debirs that is floating will just settle back down somewhere. Not much of it actually makes it over the weir. This is why I believe an in tank canister filter is best to use in conjuction with 'blowoff'. The canister can be removed after.

I do the same. I have a 2 ft small flexible hose that slips over the end of the MJ1200 powerhead nozzle. I just slip it over the one thats attached in my tank in the middle and use it to blow stuff off. Do it once every 2 weeks or so and works great.
Stuff does settle back down in the rocks some but doing it every so often does get most of it in the water column and down through my filter sock eventually

A member named Paul B swears by Diatom filters. You might contact him because almost no one uses them these days.

Almost no one uses them these days because they don't know how good they are and they don't know how important blowing the gunk out of rock is. In the tropics there are numerous typhoons or hurricaines. That is natures diatom filter. You should create a typhoon every so often if you want your reef to last forever.
Paul
