What size sump do you use??

I am setting up a 75 gallon reef and wanted to know what everyone uses on there 75's or comparable sized aquarium. Also I know bigger is better but am looking at a 29 gallon. I wanted to know if this will be much help to my system. 29 gallon is the largest I can find in my area other than a 55 and that really won't fit in my stand. Suggestions please.

I use a 29 gallon under my 90. It has about 17 gallons in it. But all I run in it is my skimmer and carbon.

I have a 75 also and I used a true 30 gal. It was a pain to get it in the stand but it works great!

I like the 29 because it is not all that bad to remove. I have thought about going bigger but I like the ease of removing mine.

I have a 15 gallon sump/fuge probably has 10 gal of water. I would like bigger but that is the biggest I could get under my stand.

I have a 29 under my 75. I used it because I had it and did not want to buy another tank. I wish I would have used a 30 long. The 29 is just a little to tall to work in while under the stand. It can be done I just whish it was a little lower.

I am setting up a new 120 (4X2X2) and I bult the stand to hold a 75 gallon sump.

If you use space in the 29 gal efficiently, it should be fine. You only need enough space in the input area for your skimmer to fit... make this area as small as possible, and seperate it from the return portion with a bubble trap. To make your return area smaller, you really will need an auto-topoff system, otherwise your return area needs to hold volume. The smaller the sump, the more important auto-topoff is. The remaining space you can use for a refugium. Even 3-4 gallons is enough to grow some macro and have room for some pods to grow. Auto topoff will allow for more room here.

What about using two smaller tanks? Plumbing may be a pain but it would be more flexible for room.

I am running a 30 gal under a 120 gal display. I have room for my skimmer, a 3 baffle bubble trap, a mag 12 return pump, and a 6 gal refug. The sump holds about 18 gal.

I use a 15 gallon with my 90. Bigger would be better but that's all that would fit.

I don't know how tall your stand is, but make sure your sump tank is not so tall that you'll have a hard time getting things out of it (like you protein skimmer) once it's inside your stand. If it's difficult to get things out, you're not going to clean them like you should.

in order of preference under a 75/90G:

40B - but the 18" width may not fit in the stand
30L - The 36" length and shorter height works better than a 29G
29G - see above.

I have a 20 Long under the stand of my 55 gal. I have enough room to add a refuge later if needed but all I have in it currently is the mag 5 return pump and an urchin skimmer.

I've got a 30L under my 90g, it holds around 16-17g of water when the pump is running. I would have loved a 40g breeder, but the stand wouldn't comfortably accomodate anything over about 15" wide. I also added a 5g tank (ATO resevoir), so the stand is pretty stuffed. The sump is built differently than some, with the drain split to deliver ~20% raw water to a front refugium section which, along with the other 80% that goes through a filter sock, bubble trap and chaeto in the back section, drains into the return chamber. The 'fuge will eventually house macros other than Chaeto, once I have enough in the display to start pruning.

Here's a picture -- I included the display so you can see the size of the sump/tank relative to one another.

When I'm finished I'm going to have 2 45's as a fuge sump setup. But I plan on using the fuge as a invert tank cause I have a dog face
