Reefer confessional (confess all your Reefer Sins)

As Many of you i confess i have done many stupid things, and i need a place to get them off my chest. i invite you all to particiate (makes you fell better) and confess your Reefing sins to the Reef Gods.

so here goes:
I got my TBS package and quickly found a mantis shrimp, i thought it would be cool to keep it in the sump, little did i know these things like to explore somehow it swam under then over two sets of baffles and.......................................................... into the pump intake(i think) i can no longer find him in the sump and i did find something that looks suspiciously like some legs.

also i spent $3000.00 more on my set up than my wife knows

I overdosed copper treatment when my tank was about 3 months old. I had the nicest fish collection die right in front of my eyes and did'nt know at the time what was going on.

I topped off my tank with saltwater for the 1st 2months, and had a salinity of 1.030 or higer , killed everthing. I saw a LFS employee using this swing arm thing one day, I asked what that thing was, OOOOHH.

I feed a fresh water crab about 2 inchs to my puffer, the lion fish snatched it up and started choking, My wife wanted me to hold the lion why she pulled the crab out with tweezers. NO WAY. He coughed it out just in time.

I'm feeling better now.

Ok. Here's mine. I went from having a FW tank to a full blown reef in one step. I did research for about two months before buying my system but had no experience. 4 months later the tank is still in operation with no deaths or problems. I also understated the expense to my wife by about $2000.

My first six fish were all clowns. They got along well for about 4 months then it was celebrity deathmatch. Actually thats not true none died but I did have to rescue and get rid of 4. Oh and I didnt even get the same kind. I had 2 tomatoes, 2 pink skunk clowns and 2 false percs. Any guesses on the main instigator or who was most dominant?

Not reef but I had a cichlid that got too agressive and killed 6 other fish so I netted him into tupperware and stuck him in the microwave for 30 seconds. Capital punishment in my aquaria!

Though I have to admit the only thing I have done and on multiple occasions is not let my tank cycle before I added my fish in my old FW tanks. But I have to admit this thread has been a blast to read. In a sick and twisted way, I laugh about the unfortunate events and untimely deaths of "naughty" livestock that never get sent to the corner, but rather put to sleep via guillotine. But I can turn around and say that, though funny at times, this might be the most informative thread ever. You can learn from someone elses mistakes before you ever make them yourself. For my sake and all those who are still starting or learning, PLEASE keep posting so we can learn from your bad examples.

BTW, 57chevygirl57 if you really need someone to take your tanks, I'll be more than happy to. I might get a saltwater tank going afterall. =)

I made my house payment late so I could buy my tank....
I've told my husband things like "I traded a frag for this" or "I returned that shirt to the store to buy this" (I have actually done THAT)

I too feel better now...
I love this thread!!

I thought I was bad, I moved my whole reef and reused the sand. I guess I am a good boy compared to this.

I hayyyve synnnned (for visual effect see video of Jimmy Swaggart apologizing for his counciling sessions with a certain young lady of questionable reputation)

This afternoon, this very afternoon. I was moving a coral and noticed a bit of cyno on a rock. I used my hand in a waving motion to fan it off the rock so I could remove it. No, I ain't to the sin yet.

Anyway while I was fanning the rock one of the Cinnamon Clowns (I ordered Tommato's and ended up with these things) kept attacking my hand. I wasn't even in the same time zone as it's anemone. This isn't the first time we've danced to this tune. After getting nipped 4 or 5 times I got a tad aggitated. I had my wife bring me a cube of frozen mysis shrimp. I held the cube between my thumb and ring finger with my middlefinger cocked and loaded against the thumb. when the little batrasturd came in to try to hog all the shrimp before it spead out through the water I fweaped it on the head. It kind of looked like it was doing a touchdown dance for a few seconds and then came back after the food again. I almost felt bad there for a second or two. I though I hurt it but it was just mad that I ran it off the shrimp.

I have dangled baby cichlids in the tank for my baby humu humu trigger to eat. It seems terrible, but it is so fun to watch! Tried this with goldfish, but they are just to oily.

I created concrete in the tank when i first set it up by adding buffer to the tank while the tank was still cloudy with sand silt.. I was like... Ooooopppps that was stupid. I had to scrape the sides of the tank with a razor blad to get it off.... there was a hard layer of sand on the surface, the ruturn pump got clogged up and I'm still taking pieces of the resultant percipitate out of the sump two months later....

not sure if its a sin, but when i fed a bta, my clown would pick food away from it...

anyway, those little kitchen bamboo skewers are great little fish discipline devices

my friend asked me how i kept my fish from stealing the food... with a straight face, i told her that i "hit him with a stick"

Seriously, my biggest sin to date was buying a tank, sand, salt mix, live rock and snails all in the same purchase. Sitting there with 100lbs of rock and a dry RR tank, with no sump, return pump, or anything... i used to hate the LFS, lucky to find a good one finally

Lesson: Think first, then think again, then read, then read again, then make a plan, revise your plan, settle on the plan, be very well prepared, shop around... THEN think about pulling out the credit card.
