how to prune Rhodactis mushroom and toadstool
I have a very large Rhodactis mushroom, probably 8" or so and it's getting too big for my tank. I don't want to frag it but want to prune it down to size. What's the best way to go about this? Can I just use a pair of scissors and trim it all around?
I also have a large toadstool that's getting out of hand. How can I trim this without fragging it? |

I dont believe you can actually 'trim' a Rhodactis. More than likely that would just result in infection and the loss of your mushroom. I know you said you dont want to frag it, but if you change your mind- a clean razor blade, right through the middle of the mushroom and its mouth. Rhodactis dont take as well to fragging as, say, a Discosoma would IME, but it can still be done.
If you want to trim up the Leather, get a nice sharp knife, and trim away. If the colony is healthy and well established to start with, it should take trimming just fine. Heads up though- dont do it in the tank- they release copious amounts of toxins into the water, and can damage other corals in the tank.

If I can't prune the Rhodactis and need to frag it to shrink down to size, do I just cut thru the middle like a pizza pie?

Yup, though I suggest just 1 long cut. The more cuts you make, the less likely it is that the shroom will recover. Good luck with it!
