Mixing Dwarf Angels
Today I saw a very nice looking C. heraldi Dwarf Angel or Herald's Angel. They got the healthy little guy last week. Would it be alright if I put it in my 70 gallon FOWLR with a Coral Beauty or will there be too much fighting? Thanks.

in that size tank you'll experience a lot of fighting between dwarf angels

2 dwarf angels can be kept in a 70 gallon together with caution.

It depends upon the layout of the tank. There will need to be rock such that the angels can keep out of each other's line of sight at times. Feeding should be done in more than one place, frequently and with little quantities.
It would be best to put them both in at the same time. An alternative would be to rearrange the aquarium rock, then add the new angel. A Coral Beauty can be very territorial. But it is an individual fish kind of thing. Another way of introducing the second angel is to put it in the tank, with a divider between it and the CB until the CB gets used to its presence. |

Has anyone kept Dwarf Angels together here?

Hi Greg129:
I did keep a Flame and a Lemonpeel together once in a 6 foot, 150 gallon tank...For about 48 hours! The Flame chased the Lemonpeel bround relentlessly! Since then, I learned a few keys about keeping them together. It really isn't for everyone- or every tank, but if you're up to the challenge, it is possible. I have kept, and have seen other keep several Centropyge together, and in my experience, the keys to success are (in no particular order): 1) Choosing smaller, perhaps juvenile fish, all similar sized... 2) Adding them all to the tank at the same time...a very important thing, in my experience...everyone is on a "level playing field" at that point. 3) Providing an aquascape with a large number of caves and hiding places, so that each fish can establish a small "territory". Yes, in nature, these guys range over pretty large territories, but a large tank can work with the smaller species, such as C. argi or C. acanthops, and even C. fisheri. 4) Using odd-numbered groups (ie; 3, 5, etc.), as this seems to disperse potential aggression better than in pairs... 5) Using the largest tank possible...Six feet plus would be a good starting point. Remeber, these are some things that worked for me, and your experiences may differ. Fish, like people, are individuals, and don't always seem to conform to our behavioral expectations! Hope this gives you a little food for thought! Scott

Yes you would encounter lots of problem... you could try catching your Heralds angel and put it in a basket for a while and let the new angel out to let it get used to your tank if it is smaller than , not much confution will happen or you could try adding two more angel than will like what algaeguy said..spread the anger around the tank....
at times. it is quiet difficult to say as it mainly depends on your fish some fishes can get along but not some... good luck in trying!!

In an tank of that size I would only try it if you can add both at the same time. As your bispinosus is already hosted I would not recomend to add another one. The bisosinous will most likly defend his territory against a food and space competitor.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Your posts were very thorough. I decided not to buy the C. heraldi. It was a very beautiful fish for only $28, but it's not worth all of the potential problems. i really don't feel like catching my Coral Beauty then adding them both at the same time. Thanks anyways--Greg.

Can people mix the large angels together in a 200 or 300 gallon tank?

They will mix well if:
1) They are of different sizes (by at least 1 inch); or 2) They are different genus; or 3) Some are juviniles & others adults; and 4) If they are added at the same time (exceptions are the more reclusive/shy species which should be added first). |
