Ok, Attempt 2 at a clam and I am not sure this one is looking good. Please help
I got a new clam, 4 inch. When I brought it home it was much darker than this.
I know he is gaping, but I was told the larger clams can recover from that once they are happy. Is this true? Is this guy checking out? Last edited by setec69; 01/11/2008 at 12:54 PM. |

looks like it is badly bleached, not gaping.
find out the previous lighting system and schedule it was under, if it was placed under weak lighting then go ahead and give him the light it needs. (via light acclimation) if it has been placed under good adequate lighting, just make sure your water conditions are stable and it should recover. also, try angling the clam towards the light

I had it angled towards the light and it keeps tipping over. Figured it did not like my lighting. I can turn down my lights with the dimmer and try to get it more use to the lights. I will try that tomorrow.
As far as water, all of my params are pretty stable. I seldom see changes from test to test current as of Sundays tests: salinity 1.026 ph 7.9(night) - 8.2 (day) temp 78-80 (chiller swing settings) alk 9dkp calc 420 mag 1480 nitrate ~0 phosphate ~0 So you dont think it looks like it is gapping? |

dim you lights down 50% and then slowly ramp them up over the next 3 or 4 weeks. how long has the clam been under the lumenbrights? and what was it under before?

I just got it about a week ago tommorrow and it has been on the sand under my lbs the entire time. I do not know what it was under before as I got it from the LFS before they could put it in their water. So figure what ever the holding tanks have in the distributors before shipping to the LFS.
I have set the lights on min and will let it recover before pumping it up. sound good? |

that sounds good for now.
its light shocked. it could have been in the dark for a while before your LFS got it. i would point it up towards the light. make a dent in the sand for it to sit in so it doesn't tip over and slowly turn your lights up. let us know how its doing
