I saw 2-3 of them at the AquaZoo on San Jose in Jacksonville FL about 1-2 weeks ago. One was a saddleback and the other a carpet, but they were very similar. No price listed.

They looked the same, but there's an unusually abrasive sales person (actually two of them) that insisted they were different. :-)

They are impressive animals.

Wow...as far as I know, saddle and carpet are two common names that cover about three different species of anemone...lol

What we typically refer to as carpet anemones are part of the Stichodactyla genus.

the three that host anemonefishes are:

1. Mertensii
2. Gigantea
3. Haddoni

Of those three, the hardiest choice is the haddoni, it is also the most common. It is typically green or brown in color. Be aware that the more exotic coloration you hunt for in the trade, the higher your chances of getting a dyed anemone likely are...

I've heard that, if you can find it, the Mertensii may actually be hardier than Haddoni.

Slakker is correct, Merten's being the easiest of the three, low flow and not bright lights. Vho's or pc's i would assume to be the best, mines under a mh but it's hidden by a rock structure for now. Followed by haddoni, then a long ways down gigantea.

That's a false statement. The more exotic coloration like Red, Pink, Blue demand higher prices due to their rarity. I've been in this industry for 20 years and I've never seen a dyed carpet anemone. The practice of coloring anemones is limited only to the Seabae anemones (Yellow base and tentacles) and it can be easily spotted. Luckily, the practice of dying anemones and especially corals was a short lived period in the industry and ended about 6-7 years ago.

Happy reefing,
Adam

So you believe that no one would dye a carpet? I've heard of it, but do you take it on good faith that there are no shiesters in the business who would color an anemone just to sell it at a higher price?

Yes, the yellow sabea's were the most popular, but they weren't the only ones dyed, and while we can "hope" that dye was a fad, my point is simply that the more you search for a rare or exotic colored anemone, esp. w/ the growth in on-line vendors who can create a snazy website and give the appearance of being a class operation, well, the more likely you are to encounter a shiester.

How is that a false statement?

You still see yellow turbinaria from time to time also. Those are dyed.

nothing personal, but given the effects of blue light at depth and wb settings on cameras, generating a false or overly enhanced color appearance is simple. you don't even need photoshop to do it.

I don't think you know what you are talking about...that picture was taken with a red filter. Look at the color of the anthias...does their color look altered? Please...

look at the color of the coral... when is anything in the ocean that green to the natural eye? My friend, your WB looks completely off in that photo and that coral would look nothing like that in our aquaria.

edit: removed statement

I couldn't get a clear shot of this coral but here is a pic with flash...do you still doubt it is yellow? Let's keep it real here.

Please, do indicate what false information is present and since you have indicated it as such, please provide the reasoning behind the claim.
Again...I USED A RED FILTER. What do you not understand here...I'm not trying to show it is green, rather that coral in question is YELLOW. The previous poster stated that these come in dyed...He is wrong, I'm sorry.

BTW, I would suggest you go back and edit your post as I edited mine immediately. I provided the wrong pic to begin with, and was refering to the wrong thread when I alluded to "false" information.
