Easiest to just get a wizzy-wig program like Frontpage. What you type is what you get, pretty much, and you can follow its manual and do pretty well if you have a web server that supports 'frontpage extensions.' Get HTML for Dummies so you can tell what you're looking at when you push the Show Codes button and look straight at the HTML it installs behind what appears in a browser. Easy as any course and you're actually doing something meanwhile.

There are really 2 subjects there. Are you interested in coding web pages and applications? Or are you interested in design?

Several community colleges offer software engineering classes for coding, but if you're primarily interested in design, I would check out any local art schools.

I like w3schools.com They have alot of free online tutorials that can help you get started.

Also, dont go the frontpage route if you want to learn how to design websites.

For me, I've found one of the best ways to learn is just opening up good ol' notepad, looking up some of the basic html stuff and doing up some simple pages to learn what does what and how the language (literally what it is ) is laid out. It is a little tough in the beginning when you don't even know how to START but once you learn some of the basics things start going faster and you can start combining things and moving onto more advanced stuff.

I like w3schools - whenever I'm doing something I tend to check into there a lot to refresh my memory because it's always months or years between times I actually code anything so I end up forgetting stuff. They have some really nice tutorials though that show you all the properties and lets you change the code to see what effect it has on the output. And not only do they have it for html but also CSS (and once you learn the wonders of CSS you won't know how you ran a site without it! ) and everything else.
