I've seen similar forums on other sites, being able to find and veiw threads for ideas was nice when they were all in one place.

This thread has more views than my tank thread. It must be lost somewhere in Reef Discussion .

Why would people vote no???
Performance reasons for one, each added forum impacts the search engine, etc.

We have a forum for large reef tanks.
We have a forum for nano reef tanks.
If we fall in between we have to post in reef discussion ?

Devil's advocate:

Would it be safe to assume that there is a relative bell curve distribution of the number of nano, normal and large tanks?

Nano and Large tanks have some very specific intricacies to them that differentiate them from a "normal" tank.

I think adding a forum just for tank threads would cause a split in Reef Discussion. Essentially, RD and RD Pt 2. I think it would make it more difficult for the average reefer (see my thought about about the bell curve) to find information if they have to look/search in two places.

That said, I also this it could be a nice idea to put all the "Building my new xx gallon. come along" type of threads in one place. But I am not the final voice in this.

i thought that this was the point of the new forum, to be a place just for tank builds, sort of a slight mix between DIY and RD, right?

Ok, I agree with the bell curve. The main reason I see a very specific need for the new forum is this:
I work pretty hard to keep my tank thread up to date. Any one who post in their own tank thread will definitly agree with me on this one. It is work but, I enjoy it, and hope that others will benifit from my experience in the ways that I continually benifit from others threads.
The problem occurs here: I have a vpecific question about a new inhabitant or problem or solution in my reef. I may post it on my thread, but only a cerain # of readers are going to see it. So guess what? I have to double post and start a new thread in Reef Discussion regardless. So now I have two threads on the front page and the resopnse to my problem is going to come from the double post rather than my tank thread 99% of the time and much quicker.
So being the devils advicate: How does this use less bandwith? May be a split in RD would actually help keep our information better organized. And finally the numbers don't lie: 107 yes - 12 no.

Wouldn't a forum for such threads only create more competition (viewers wise)?

I'm sure there are people who don't frequent the nano forum or the large tank forum but say primarily the RD forum.

They would see far more threads and would make it less interesting???

Also, a thread in the RD forum might be seen by far more people compared to the thread being in a specific tank threads forum????

Notice all the question marks.

I think of RC as a community resource database for reef tanks, not a competition.

I am for sure not advocating taking away from the other forums. If a nano tank guy wanted to keep the thread in a SIG forum then that would be his/her desicion. I can without a doubt say that for my current 100gal system I have drawn much ispiration from the 3g pico tanks to the 500g room dividers (although I had to sift through a lot of other nano specific topics to find the tank threads ).

The RD forum seems to cover a very broad array of topics. IMO that is why there is so much traffic. There are countless threads on a daily basis that answer a specific question about our hobby, get 25 views 2 responses and just disapear into the abyss forever. A good tank thread will not be lost. Either the owner will continually provide good information, or another user will find it in a search and bump it or ask the poster a specific question.

These threads are such a useful resource for our community and I believe they deserve their own special home.

No, you can start your tank thread in the LPS forum, SPS forum, Softy forum, Anemone forum,...etc if that what your tank is predominately filled with. There's a forum for most types of setups on RC IMO. RD can be for mixed reefs...

Dandy,
You is a pretty funny guy. I like the way you keep this thread in the forfront.

"Tank Thread"

Anyway, great idea. I am one of those "building THE tank, come along for the ride" folks. I personally would love to have the tank diary/journal forum. It only takes a matter of minutes to have a tank building thread buried in the RC forum.

Thanks Bemmer. Yes buried is a gentle way to put it. Most people LOVE these threads, why not showcase them? The people who don't like tank threads, well they would be much easier to avoid if they were in a differant spot .

I voted yes...I really enjoy reading those type of threads and have picked up many new ideas from others tank diaries.
