Tattood Fish
Does anyone have a take on this new fad with the tattood fish. I've seen some in the store and it seems pretty cool, and there is a tattoo parlor in town here doing fish tattoo's. I'm thinking about having my name in a heart tattood on my large albino oscar--as a christmas present to him--but I'm a little concerned about the safety of this. Does anyone have any thoguhts on this?

Go into the parlor first and get a tattoo half the size of your body on the side of your body, and then make your decision.
And be sure you put the fish's name on you as his Xmas present to you. I would say no way. That's way too much trauma for a fish to handle IMO. |

This has got to be a joke.
Absolutely ridiculous! I you're for real though, I feel so sorry for all the creatures you care for.

The practice is the real deal, but it has no business in the hobby of responsible reefkeeping. The things people will do to make a buck. |

I just hope you aren't tatooing any oscars. oscars are a great fish- mine always knows when i come home- it's like the dog i never had, and i don't have to worry about it whizzing on the carpet.

I had no idea my post would create such a stir. It's funny that dcombs44 actually found that article. Steve's pet's world is right around the corner from my house, and that is where I got the idea, and then this tattoo parlor starting doing the fish tattoos, and I got really excited. I just wanted to feel loved and I thought if my Oscar got my name tattood on his side it would make me feel good. I did not know it would hurt the fish.

tatoos are great, believe you me. I got some in places I don't talk about in reef forums or unless Tony is around. But they should not be put on fish. If I ever meet anyone who has tatooed a fish, he better pray he does not run into Tony or me, whether it be at the LFS or elsewhere. makes me angry.

I promise you your fish will love you more if you don't have someone pull it out of the water, pin it down, and carve a heart on it. I suppose if he tells you he wants a tattoo, then by all means, but until then.........
and......Jesus loves you too. Please don't tattoo your fish!! |

I cant believe what people will do. When I was in Thailand last year, I saw this Asian Black Bear with a Union Jack tatooed on its left hind leg. sick bastards. I dont know why someone would do that. or why someone would choose a union jack tatoo - just a bad tatoo choice alltogether.

OK here is a little insight. I worked at an animal hospital for 3 years as a vet tech, the person who takes the blood of your animal and assists the doctor in surgery among other things. We had a doctor who would come in and tattoo serial codes on the inside of dog ears.
After some dialogue we got on the subject of euthanizing fish. It turns out that when you euthanizie an animal, its basically an overdose of whatever anastasia the doctor is using. We even got into the subject of anestitizing fish to do treatments, or examine them. You can put the anesthesia right into their swimming water and they will go to sleep. We also talked about fish feel little pain but I'm still not sure how I feel about fish not feeling ANYTHING. With all of this said, fish can survive out of the water for a decent period of time while asleep and you could tattoo them up, and then plop them right back into non anesthesia treated water and they will come to once it wears off. I think it's more unusual to do this than anything, like people tattooing their pit bulls, but it CAN be safely done IMO. |

I don't think Beerguy should get credit for 3 bans if they were all the same person.

On a side note? Brian, do you work for a CPA firm in the Mattoon area? If so, which one and where?
