Sorry to leave you hanging Gary. I'll give you a hint. It's in the Mussidae Family. Same as Acanthastrea.

OK, it's a Scolymia vitiensis.

what the??

i posted this in its own id thread but only got one reply to check out gregs piece on page 6. from what randy posted mine looks nothing like that. the polyps are good sized...the largest polyp(right of bottom center) is probably 2.25 inches in diameter, if not larger! has anyone seen anything like this before? thanks for any help!

how big is your oxypora piece marlooney? my gf's is about 8inches by 4 inches....really nice till it faded into an overall lilac color.

anyone have any ideas on how to brighten its mouths back up? (no need for the 'send it to me' talk!...unless you wanna trade acan lords!!)

i dunno if it is what randy says it may be(Scolymia vitiensis)... my piece is definetly more than a single large polyp as seen at the link randy provided as well.
http://whelk.aims.gov.au/coralsearc...20pages/340.htm

the growth of my piece seems to be more flattened(the thickness of the actual coral tissue is maybe 1/4 inch when expanded).

anyone else have any ideas?

They do look similar, but I don't think they are the same. It's hard to tell from just a picture, but Gary's look like the corallite diameter is large. It also looks like Gary's piece is just 3 or 4 corallites. Your piece looks like smaller corallites, less than 15mm, and more polyps. Though the color is astoundingly similar, your's looks more like what people have been calling A.echinata.

Then again, maybe Gary has a serious Macro shot there, and I'm way off.

The corallites on my coral are very large, and there's only 3 of them. You are probably right Randy. I can't seem to find anything else similar to this thing.

lol. next time you're out by arden mall, you can come check it out. if it is an echinata...score one for me! lol. until i figure out what it is...i'm gonna keep hunting to figure this one out.

oh yeah, did you end up getting that red echino from that store? if you wanna half it we can offer him 100 for it...i am new to the area and someone told me of the store so i went to check it out...saw that piece and talked to the owner about it. he is the most clueless man in the world for coral. when i told him i wanted to ask about a piece of coral to see if he would sell it he said," oh the toadstool...yeah, that's not for sale."....... i was kinda dumbfounded that anyone would want to buy that thing...but to each his own, ya know? anyway, i saw your post here not too long after and yeah.... so let me know if you wanna go half and half or something. =)

Their size are kinda small for vitiensis...If it is an acan then my best guess would be acan ishigakiensis. Pic number 4 or 8, page 31, volumne 3 in the Veron set. Pic number 8 is a much closer resemblence.

Please understand that this is my best guess from your pic and the pic in the Veron set.

Rare find btw.

John
