i would just do a large water change. and find the dead areas. that should get rid of the cyano.

This does seem to work great. I tried it. But, after I used it, I was told that it shouldn't be used on a tank if it was less than 6 months old because it would also kill/eliminate all of the good bacteria in your sandbed.

It shouldn't. Many people do this with no problems. Just think of how many cloudy, or overcast days there are in any area.
