Is a fuge needed in a barebottom tank?
I'm planning a new system and have a question before I build the sump. If your running a barebottom SPS tank. Would a fuge be needed?

You're not supposed to run a fuge...if the algae grows, that means there's nutrients, and you don't want nutrients in a BB system. Thus, the fuge would be rendered useless.

A fuge is never "needed". It can be helpful. I'd design it to have one and you can just put rock in there for extra help. Also gives pods a place to produce which could help as well.
Also, if you change your methodology, it's easy to throw a handful of chaeto in it and you've changed.

It probably wouldn't hurt to have one, but you don't need to have one.
IMO, it's hard not to have nutrient issues from time to time ... so a 'fuge that won't collect detritus [or can be very easily kept clean] I would think would be a benefit. But, I haven't run one for about 16 months now with BB, and I'm pretty happy with things [http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...hreadid=701566]
