Reef without rocks

I am thinking of setting up a 5 gal. mushroom only tank, and was wondering if i could do this without live rock. It will have a sandbed and a hob refugium, there wont be any livestock except a few snails. I could hook up a canister to the tank, but what media should i put in there? Thanks, -Dan

Mushrooms grow best on a hard substrate. If you don't want any rockwork, I would at least suggest you place some small pieces of liverock rubble on the sand for them to spread to.

If you don't want liverock in the main tank, you should put some small pieces of live rock in the fuge for bacterial filtering.

The Mushrooms will need some rock(s) to adhere too in the main tank.

lol seems like everyone is jumping circles around your filtration question in a 5 gallon u could get away with very little filtration the canister would prob be overkil so would the ac300 for that matter but what u can do is dial it back to reduce the flow somewhat since your not going to run any LR u are removing a filtration emthod so my suggestion would be to get some LR rubble and turn the ac300 in a refugium with lots of rubble that should provide u with adequate filtration for the tank

when i had my 5 gallon nano my filtration consisted of 8 lbs lr an mj600 and regular water changes

With that small size of tank, I think you can get away with that filtration. However, I wouldn't call it a reef.
