# of tangs in a 125g?
I have an idea in my head and wanted some input. My upgrade will be finished soon and was thinking about my fish list. I was thinking about housing 3 tangs. I will be adding my 2 year old Hippo tang. I wanted a Powder Blue and a Achillies but figured they would fight with each other. Since I will already have blue coloring in the Hippo I will cancel out the powder blue. So I was thinking, if possible, the Hippo, Achillies, and a Kole Yellow Eye Tang. If I cant do 3 I will do away with the Kole.

I think you could do that.

I agree, that should be doable.

I would really like to go with those 2 instead of the kole. Anyone ever house the two? Any problems occur?

You should be fine with 3 tangs, but if you want an achilles, I would skip the powder blue. Achilles are rather sensitive and powder blues are bullies.

I have a Powder Blue and a Sailfin that seem to get along. Thinking of adding a Naso.

Yeah thats what I thought. Thanks for the input everyone. I like the achillies better anyway. The Kole will just have to take the PBTs place.

Good to know. I've been wanting an achilles, but have always held off after everything I've read. Now that I lost my powder blue, I'm looking for an achilles. If what you say holds true, the achilles won't have a problem going in with my yellow and atlantic blue.

Achilles can get pretty nasty too. Koles are fairly pleasant.

I love my Kole tang. Between him and the lawnmower blenny, they have completely rid my tank of algae

I would be hesitant to put an Achilles in anything less than a 7'-8' long tank. They seem to be incredibly sensitive and really need room to stretch out. Tangs grow more aggressive as they get bigger and 3 tangs in a 125 would be too much long term, IME.

Well I am still going to give it a try. The Achillies and the Kole will both be juveniles. I would like to see them grow and see how they act. Most of my LR will be in my sump so there will be plenty of swimming room. If I run into a problem down the road it will just give me a reason to upgrade.

I also advise against an Achilles tang. They do best with a minimum of a 180g tank and also a tank with good water quality and more than generous amounts of flow.
After watching a few nature shows - Achilles Tangs come from high surge zones i.e. pounding waves and really need not just benefit from the high flow but require it. I think a PBT may be a better choice

Why not get a Zebrasoma tang instead of the Kole? In fact, I'd skip the Achilles like others have suggested and maybe get a Sohal and or a Purple tang.

you should go with your current hippo, skip the achilles and get a sailfin or purple tang, along with a kole. Thats what I would do if I had a larger tank.

AquaReeferMan- Putting an Achilles, even as a juvenile, in a 125 is probably not a smart move. Get a kole and a purple tang or even a kole and a PBT. Just don't put a tang that needs twice as much space as you can offer in your tank.

I'm currently housing an adult Scopas, and juvenile (teenage?) Kole and Hippo tangs in my 125.
But I also know full well that I'll have to move to a 180 in 3-4 years as the Kole and Hippo grow larger. So far no real aggression issues, but the Scopas is king of the tank if only because he's the largest. Having 2 "utilitarian tangs" in the Scopas and Kole does help combat pest algae!
