Im seeing that all the gate valve mods are diffrent than mine. I dont have the open pipe all the way to the top of the skimmer top. I basically have the gate valve going horizontal. Like this.....Pipe from outflow, 90, gatevalve, 90 and a pipe going into the water. Does this have a diffrence in performance in the skimmer?

It sounds like your drain line is "closed", which could create a siphon and make it harder to get your water level higher.

Yup...just like that. I will have to check this when I upgrade tanks. Im not running into problems with the skimmer. It has been running like this for 2 years. I will see if I notice a diffrence with it open.

I have a CS6-1 (I think? had it about 3 years, it's 20 inches tall and has Sedra 5000 pump) in my sump. I have been frustrated by the tiny amount of skimmate it's producing, so I found this thread.
I found the gate valve modification info and went off to the hardware store. I couldn't find a pvc gate valve, so I just bought and assembled the other parts. The modification is now on my skimmer, minus gate valve. Anyone else try this? How important is the valve? Many thanks for any input! |

Though I haven't done it yet & can't comment on how well it works, my understanding is that it doesn't actually increase the skimmate, but makes the bubble/water level easier to control. By replacing the foam riser tower (which regulates water level by equaling the height of the skimmer body water volume) with the gate valve you get finer control of water level, without grabbing the wet foam riser. I have a 6-2, which works pretty well with my 90 mixed reef, I have the equiv. of a sedra 3500 (dolphin branded). I haven't been able to find a 1.25" gate valve locally either. Let me know where you find one!

Has anyone bought one of the RS80 promo skimmers? I just bought one from PA and it came with a Gen-x pump and not the Sedra. I couldn't find anything on the gen-x pumps for the smaller skimmers.

I bought one from Marine Depot and it came with the Sedra 3500.

Let me ask the Euro-Masters my question. I have a 210g with a 70g sump, do you think a RS-250 would be the right solution? I would say I am keeping a light bioload but I would be lying. Thanks for any help!

The 250 would work great IMO, but the RC250 would be better.

I spoke with Jeff back in April, and he was telling me that ER is working with gen-x on a custom line of pumps that are designed to fit ER's impellers better (the reason why they're a louder). They will also be as silent as the eheims.
Maybe this is part of the reason they are moving more towards Gen-x. Jim

I'm pretty sure it's the 2400. The problem right now is that it's really loud when it runs.

Air valve wide open, or better yet, removed.
Be sure it has the new black NW impeller.

cidory - close your air valve down to 1 o'clock - just a wee bit - smaller bubble size - slightl darker skimmate.

I have not found that to be the case with an RS 250. Its a different skimmer than an RC250.

Yeah I am having more success with my air valve slightly closed. Interestingly enough too, when I tested it with my Dwyer air meter, it made no difference. Still trying to figure it out but I get much smaller and appearantly more bubbles with the valve around 1.

The skimmer is producing more air that is required for your setup. Continue to dial it in.
How much air are you drawing at the 1 position?

The air valve will have a different effect of different skimmers. I don't doubt that 12:00 and 1:00 are the same on a RS100 with 4LPM.
On an RS250 that is drawing 18 - 20 LPM, it makes a difference. From my testing, even 12:00 restricts airflow on the SP5. Removing it increases flow, and replacing the airline with a larger one increases it more. BTW, you should be getting more than 4 LPM on the SP2.

I completely agree with you sjm. The effect of the valve is probably quite different with different skimmers and air draws. I bet the bigger the skimmer, the bigger the effect. I don't know what to say about the 4 LPM. That's just what it gets. I sent it in for servicing to ER and it came back still only drawing 4 LPM. My guess is the website numbers shouldn't be taken as gospel. I would curious to know what other SP2 users are getting though. I also relly have no way of calibrating this Dwyer meter. I plan on using it for "relative" comparisons when i try a meshmod.

Well, I'm pretty disappointed with Euro-reef. I would love to tell you how great my skimmer is working but I still can't get it to work. The impeller on my pump is bad and I called ER on Dec 27. I still haven't gotten my new impeller and have been running skimmerless for 2 weeks now. I expected better service from them after everything I had heard. Maybe I should have gone with Deltec.
