Overdosing Magnisium

Is it possible to have too much magnesium in the tank? A few local folks said to speed caroline algae growth, just dose the tank high with Mg. It worked for me, but want to know what, if any, ill affects this will have on the tank. My Ca levels are 420 and the KH is 10. I have a FOWLR now, but want to ensure I can keep the chemical levels constant before I add corals.

For proper coraline growth you want good steady water readings.
Proper water flow, proper water source , proper flow , good lighting, and do your water changes. I golden rule in SW is never add anything you havent tested for.
Plus it may helped to jump start the growth but if it stops growing then you need to solve the reason rather then just dosing.

Water flow is good. I have about 600GPH through the sump plus two K4's in the tank. All water perms are okay as well. I have a 0 reading for Nitrate/Nitrite and Ammonia. PH is around 8.1, constant. The only issue I have right now is phosphate (0.5). I am working to get that down. I have used RO/DI from the start, no tap water has ever been added. I change 10% per week, mixed for 24 hours prior to adding it to my tank. Do you see anything that could be changed in my tank maintenance?

If this is a 135 gallon tank then the 2 koralia pumps are way to small but great for spot flow. You need good high end pumps with flow control knobs and duckbill tips for dirrection control.

Agree that my pumps are not the best, but for my current FOWLR tank, thay are more then enough. I dont have corals and do not plan on adding any SPS till I can afford it. I would love to have a few Tunze pumps, but they are way too expensive. Once I get the confidence to keep SPS, I will likely upgrade the pumps.

So back to the original question...Can you overdose magnisium?

Yes like all things you can overdose Mg. If you are extremely worried, like the fish doesnt look right or something is wrong, I would check the levels.

You should also try to raise Magnesium a max of about 100mg/L per day.

I wouldn't target a magnesium level over about 1350 ppm or so without a reason. What is the level currently?

In a FO tank then this is not an important reading.

Not really, as long as you are doing regular water changes to replenish the basic stuff.

I test mag in my FO about once a month just to keep an eye on it. As long as it is between 1250 and 1350 ppm, I'm happy.
