we did San diago on Sat and it was pretty nice. Only got cold after we hit deeper then 50 feet. But the 7mil wetsuit and 3mil vest kep me pretty warm. The only cold part was around my lips but wasn't bad at all.

Up here in Nor Cal, 7mm is more than enough (46-52 year round temp). Don't guage your purchase based on a rental wetsuit. They're usually so compressed (air bubbles in the neoprene gone) from being used to death that there's not much insulation to them. The 7mm one-piece I use (O'neil) is actually warmer than the 7/7 farmer Johns I've rented (14mm on the torso). The two piece suits are bulkier than a one-piece which limits your mobility when spearfishing and you need to wear a lot more weight to counteract the buoyancy of all that neoprene. If your freediving a two-piece is worthless.
Yeah, we got the abalone (mmmmm, delicious), and the halibut and rockfish are pretty good too. For you east coast guys, those lobster snares you use are illegal here in California; they can only be taken by hand. Also, no tanks on your back, in the boat, or anywhere near you when you're pulling those giant gastropods we love to eat up here. BTW Nor Cal guys and gals, Ab season re-opens in August, YIPPEEE! |
