Pistol Shrimp

I have a pistol shrimp in my tank that was a hitchhiker. I have never seen it, but I hear it all the time at night. I bought a watchman goby to bring it out with no luck. I verified with my LFS that it is not a mantis based on the popping noise the mantis make and the popping noise the pistol shrimp makes. Can anyone tell how I can get a look at the shrimps?

Just be patient and keep looking. It should come out during feeding time, so keep a good eye out for him.

If you want to get it out, you can set up a trap to catch him

Mine tends to only make appearances at night or early morning before all the lights come on. Try doing a feeding after all the lights go off at night and go on a "night dive" with a flashlight. Most pistols are pretty small (1" or so) so don't be expecting to see a giant lobster like thing cruising around.

I got a TON of them hitchhiking on fiji LR... I have seen 5-6 large ones (2+ inch) and 30+ babies (-1/2 inch). Ive never fed them but i am sure since they have lived as many years as they have they are getting food. There is an under rock network of caves and they close their "doors" every morning. I never got any goby to bond up with any so far and i am still pron to panic when i hear that "glass cracking" sound in the middle of the night.

See but atleast you have seen yours. You have a picture as proof. I want to see my shrimp. The sound is coming from the same area, so I know were to look for it.

Most of the hitchhiking pistol shrimp are not host shrimp and they do not live with a goby and will often kill it.

LOL.... you got me there!

At night is your best bet. I normally see their antennae sticking out, moving sand. They seem to use them like hands. Look along the bottom against your rock. Hopefully one has made a "door" in an area you can see.

I had never heard that but dont dispute it either. I have lost some smaller fish (gobies & firefish) over the years for unknown reasons.
