Sea Swirl Problem

Opened up my sea swirl after seeing some rusty color grease on the outlet elbow. The motor and mechanism had the same rusty color grease on it. Is this stuff safe for the tank? What exactly is it? Anyone else with a sea swirl seen this with theirs?
