carbon Media ?

Hi again,

I was wondering what opinions there where about using Carbon media in my AquaClear ?

I have my new 50 Gal. reef tank set up ( 36" l x 16" d x 20" h ) with a SeaClone 150 Skimmer, and an AquaClear 70 with to skimmer attachment to pick up any possible top residue.

I'm asking again, as I did not even have time to read the replies this week, and from what I see, if it's more than 3 days old it's gone ?

Cheers,
Denis

PS : The search option is out of commission.

yes, i would use carbon in the aquaclear filter. It helps clear the water and helps take out other things such as the chemicals that corals release which might make corals fight between each other. I suggest the black diamond one by...well i forget who makes it, but its called black diamond haha.

As for your skimmer... dont expect a whole lot out of the seaclone unless you mod it up a bit (there are lots of mods for them)...they're not very good without the mods in my opinion.

Also, the search feature will RARELY work for you, or me for that matter, because we're not paying members. Pay 24 bucks a year and you can use the search feature all you want...otherwise i've only ever got it to work at like 2 in the morning when no one else is on lol.

Many of us run a good quality carbon 24/7

Black Diamond is used by many. I use Seachems Matrix carbon which is a level up IMO.

Dude, I can get 2 liters of Matrix for about 15 bucks.

2 liters of Purigen is about 80 bucks.

I won't argue with ya. You spend your money and I'll spend mine.

Same goes for Chemi-Pure

And it all does the same thing, whether you want to believe it or not.

Most say that 1 month is the tops for how long you should let it run in your system before you change it, because it can start letting stuff out (i think its like phosphates or something??)

A good rule would be just every 3 weeks or something like that.

I use Marineland Black Diamond Carbon 24/7 in my Aquaclear filter and replace it monthly. I just put in in a media bag and throw it in the AC. Works great.

Yes, to all. 4 to 6 weeks is what seems to be recommended by the experts.

Maybe someday, someone will invent a carbon that changes color when exhausted.

What do you think Boomer, you got some time on your hands.

Are you saying you run 2,000 GPH through your sump?

Thanks everyone,

There is so much to read on the Net, but also a lot of contradiction, and running Cabon was one of my concerns, as some say it removes trace elelments, some others say it does not affect things as water changes creates stability.
So Carbon it is.

So I will run it in my AquaClear 70 change it every 30 days.

Cheers,
Denis

PS : The SeaClone 150 is not bad so far, but it does require tweeking every day to adjust for the skimming / foam.

The Seaclone will settle in a couple of weeks. Try and resist the urge to play with it .
