What is a good price for a 8 inch round Bright Red colony? My LFS owner thinks it is a red brain. I offered him $50 and he is mulling it over.

That is a Mycedium. It's not usually referred to as a chalice, but is still a member of the Pectiniidae family. This is the same family some of the other "chalices" are found, including Echinophyllia and Oxypora. A true chalice, IMO is an Echinopora, which is a member of the Faviidae Family. To be fair, the word "chalice" is just a fancy word for cup.
Main Entry: chal·ice
Pronunciation: 'cha-l&s
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin calic-, calix; akin to Greek kalyx calyx
Date: 14th century
1 : a drinking cup : GOBLET; especially : the eucharistic cup
2 : the cup-shaped interior of a flower

So Mycedium would be best described as a chalice, since it's the only one that really cups.

Is that the source of the "Chalice" name, the cup-like shape they grow to? I guess I'd have to agree, as Echinophyllia tends to plate out, rather than grow upwards in whorls or cups.
Hehe, I haven't let one of my pieces of Echinopora get big enough to do that before I fragged it back, so I'll have to take your word on it Randy.

Jeez, you guys are up early....
Here's my green Echinophyllia taken several months ago. This coral is getting 'out of control' big right now. I've placed this green one over a big field of brown star polyps to let smother 'em .... something these corals are able to do quite well!

We're on reverse lighting schedules, Randy! Well, good morning now. Here's one for ya'll: what is it? Total size of the piece is 4" diameter. Each polyp is very large. I've never seen another coral like this before.

This isn't a Scolymia, and I don't know of many other corals starting with "Sc"...
