What is the best depth for a sand bed, and how do i stop my sand turning black?

The black inside the sand is hydrogen sulfide buildup that is caused by excess trapped nutrients. Typically, relaxing on the feeding, water changes, removal of any extra buildup on the substrate, and good water flow will help prevent this from happening. Whatever you do, don't stir it up. It can be lethal to the livestock in the tank. The actual depth of the substrate is completely up to you.

Do you have a pic of the area that's turning black? How deep is your sandbed? Don't disturb this area or you will release the hydrogen sulfide gas, which can be deadly. Get some more flow going in the tank.
