Good Skimmer for a 10gal nano?

Like the subject line says, Im looking for a good skimmer for a 10 gal nano. I dont have a sump, or fuge, so Im looking for something I can hang on the back or if small enough, just have it inside the tank. Something like the Lee's counter current would be great unless theres something better.

Looks good, but a bit too pricey for a 10 gal tank.

I put a used bak pak 2 on my 10 gal nano. You can find them used at a reasonable $ on this site and nano-reef.com all the time.

You can end up with a lot of money in these little tanks. Don't short change the inhabitants just because the tank is small. In many cases the demands of these smaller tanks can be greater 'n there larger brothers.

causeofhim: thanks for the info

just dave: Well, the nano is nothing but inverts, a harlequin shrimp, a sea horse, snail, and the rest corals. I dont think the bio load is as big as it would be if I had fish also. The Harlequin only feeds twice a month, they are messy eaters but I always perform a water change right after he finishes eating a star.

A used Red Sea Prizm would be an ok choice. They work good enough for a 10 gallon tank.

Otherwise, you could buy a Hagen Aquaclear 500 (I believe they have renamed them. It could be called a 70 now.) These can be converted very easily into a hang-on refugium.

A fuge is no substutue for a skimmer. I have them both (AC 300 fuge and the Bak Pak 2) on my 10 gal.

I would just do water changes if it were me...worked great for my acros and clams when they were in the 15G

If you are handy then you could build one of these
Protein Skimmers from the DIY forum over at N-R...everyone loves undertheradars nano skimmer..and if you are handy and already have a drill then you can build it for like $12..and it's supposedly very good..better than a prizm, almost as good as a normal remora () : )

1) Undertheradar's Nano Skimmer http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/sho...surface+skimmer

2) Code Toad's Smallest protein skimmer http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/sho...;threadid=30941

3) Reefer_Buddha's Nanomora Protein Skimmer http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/sho...;threadid=22469

4) Nico's 24g NC Skimmer http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/sho...;threadid=59487

5) Davidd's Xtreme Billyblanco Skimmer http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/sho...;threadid=53973

Cheers,

grimmjohn

PS

Tunze has a nano skimmer?
How the heck have I missed this for so long!?!

I wonder how it compares to my remora pro...off to do some research...I don't know if it could handle a 30G BB acro tank though.

Thanks for the link just dave

Here is a pic of a skimmer (Red Sea Airlift) that I added to a Hagen AC filter for my 5.5 gallon.

Current's new Fission would probably be your best bet if you want a skimmer - that being said, I have a 24-gallon SPS tank and don't find a skimmer useful at all - I've tried running a few different types, but they don't seem to remove very much of anything. Probably helps that I barely feed my tank - but if you're doing 10% water changes every week (I do one about every month) you shouldn't have any water quality problems that a skimmer would resolve....

Though skimmers probably wont remove much waste from a nano, they are usefull for adding O2 to the water, which is both good for everything in the tank and also helps keep the pH stable.

Believe it or not I have a Sea Clone on my 10 gallon and it works well. I wouldnt reccomend it for anything bigger but it gets the job done on a 10. Not expencive either. JMO.
