Have you tried marco rocks special pieces. Not to jump on the thread but I have a plastic pond that I was going to throw down my basement and try this (never tried before). If anyone has the experience (and needs somewhere to make rock for themselves) I have the place, tub, and pump.

If you have an empty tank grab some live sand, dry sand, and portland cement. You put the drysand into the tank and wet it...dig out the mold you want it to look like. Use a rock that you have as a stamp to make it have a more realistic look. mix up the cement with the live sand and pour it into your mold. Then take a bunch of BBQ scewers or whatever and push them into the cement to make it pourous. pull them out and let it dry. Viola you just made your own live rock. Cure it like any rock and add that into your tank!

to help make it porous, you could also put in noodles, shells, crushed coral, etc

doing this needs a very long curing time. you can go to garf.org for great instructions.

If you make your own, make sure you cure it longer than you would normal live rock, changing out the water often. The cement as it cures will mess your pH up if you drop it in your tank too soon. PM Fitch4. He makes his frag disks out of aragacrete daily.
