Wow...these corals have to be my new favorites. Of course I would have to pick the expensive ones to fall in love with. I guess I will stick with zoas for the time being

Just wanted to throw a question out here to the masses and see what everyone thought:

How is it that different morphs develop? Is it just that they are kept under different lighting? Is it more of an evolution thing? I am just curious because it is simply amazing the number of different morphs not only in acans, blastos, and micros, but also zoanthids and palys as well.

I am just curious....must be that marine science background seeping out of me

Any thoughts?

Adam

The morphs themselves are totally genetics... But often you will hear us speak of a frag "morphing" under different lighting or tank parameters, For the most part "Morphing" is just color changes not structural. Mostly, the structures and points of interest will remain the same during different "Morphing" periods but the colors themselves may also change due to feedings or lighting, parameters ect. One further noteworthy point that I have found is that without a doubt these corals have "MOODS" sometimes they may appear totally shriveled up or without color and other times they may simply shine and appear to pose and say cheese! Kinda like when you try to take a 4yo. childs picture LOL . I have also found a wonderful way to get them "In the Mood" for poseing for my photography is to let them sit in a bowl of room temp tank water for about 1-2 hours before the photo sessions... this seems to loosen them up like 3 stiff martinis would a centerfold model

Great explanation Doc. I appreciate it. Speaking of martinis....that sounds great

So is it the fact that there are so many different varieties (color-wise) that there are always new colors being found? I guess I'm just curious what makes for instance a Tyree coral versus Doc's Pink Floyd (not sure if you named it or not). Does it just depend on who found it or brought it to the public for sale?

Sorry for all the questions, just curious about these organisms...they really fascinate me. Back to the pics now...

I believe they are the same Pink Floyd. RF Pink Floyd and RF Pink Lemonade have changed so much that RF cancelled all sales. Here is some interesting reading (I just found all this out last night as I'm picking up some of each ) I'm getting them from someone who purchased them directly from the source (pre-RF) and he guaranteed that the colors on RF are what they were - however, the two colonies I'm getting look almost exactly like Docs. About a year ago I had the chance to pick up some of the super rare pinks that almost looked translucent on a trip to Aquadesignz, and I didn't buy them because I didn't think they'd hold their colors.

They look different now but still just as amazing - especially the Pink Lemonade!

Each Morph: the Floyd, the Lemonade and OJ Simpson are totally Micheal Baes... He got them from a dude we wont directly mention and at that time I do believe that being totally unhealthy and almost ready to die and perhaps even chemically treated those may have been the colors.. Mr. Bae continued to advertise them as he still does today as being that UNOBTAINABLE color (Check frags.org)... They are not that color! There has been much controversy with re: to this subject but NO ONE has ever been able to produce a pic that even remotely resembles the pictures that he sold them to us with... "Order a Mercedes but Get a Cadillac". When he was going to produce updated photos to prove it to all of us... HIS tank crashed that very night and killed everything This is sad as he was a great collector and many valuable morphs perhaps perished in that travesty. That said they are probably some of the most awesome MICROs ever to hit our shores... If this interests you there is about 11 pages listed under a pink lemonade thread here and that thread is what eventually brought light to this subject... shortly thereafter Tyree as the great businessman he is retired the morph until he could actually find out what color the morph may stabilize at... The avatar that I use here is the stabilized version of high light Pink Lemonade that we speak of . I have done nothing more than purchase it, respect it and point out the fact that the pictures were very misleading. We should prolly not speak of this any further as the last thread was finally closed and I would hate to lose this thread. But there is your explaination

Any one names a micro... I continue the names that I purchased the micro under out of respect to the other collectors, to track the morphs liniage and to Identify them more easily than "The red one with big green veins" instead I say "LOVE N HATE" . If a morph does not have a name and it becomes large enough to frag then I often let my wife name it LOL ... Have you seen "Deceit"?

The Micheal Bae thread is very interesting reading
