thoughts on sand sifting stars?

What are you guys thoughts on sand sifting stars? Are they good for cleaning the sand bed or do they take too much out? meaning, do they basically strip the sandbed making it so there is no good bacteria or microfauna?

They usually eat everything within a month then slowly die off
