fish advice needed

A friend of mine was wanting to slowly move towards a reef tank and he was wondering what cheap, colorful, hardy fish he should get. He is running PC lighting on a 55 gallon with a decent amount of live rock with a lot of shaded hiding areas. He is also very frugal and would like not to spend too much for the fish overall. I suggested a few chromis' for him but what would other people suggest based on their experiences? Thanks.

Chromis are sometimes a little touchy in new tanks- esp the ones out of the chicago wholesalers. Wont do wrong with clowns- maroons tomatos and cinamons being the sturdiest. Royal gramma, strawberry basslett, royal or bicolor diadema are cheap and colorful. If there are no shrimps or crabs of small size the pixie or spotted hawkfish are reasonable. As far as damsels go the yellowtail blues are not as aggressive as most and cheap. Bangaii cardnials as well as the pajama are not out of line price wise. The key thing is to avoid the things that will not do well and although not expensive, will cost more when replaced due to loss.

Royal gramma is a good one but they can be a bit nasty. Its the only fish that would try to bite me.

In addition to the fish identified by Syrinx, I would also think that something like a Six-Lined Wrasse and the various a Watchman Gobies would make good choices.

From my experience, albeit limited, both are routinely available at LFS's and are relatively cheap. Both are reef shape and compatible with a broad number of other fish species. I do believe that they are both considered to be hardy fish. A Six line and clown were the first two fish that I owned. I really liked my Six-line...constantly cruised around the rockwork pecking at pods.

The Purple Firefish is also a good choice. usually about 15 to 20 bucks and a favorite among the ladies...well, my wife anyway.

I wish we had $20 purple firefish local. I liked the chalk bass for cheap and easy.
