My peppermint shrimp, murdered?
I think my pistol shrimp finally got a bunch of shots on the peppermint shrimp. He is eating him, and the goby is at the other side of the tunnel getting fed by me.
Was the pistol shrimp the cause of this? He keeps snapping at it too. He was alive and kicking a couple hours ago when I got home.. =\ Is it possible?

Just hope he does not confuse your fingers with a shrimp! They do have the nickname "thumb-splitters".

Apparently so. I'm fairly new to the hobby but like to learn -- Where did you come across that thing? Just the LFS?
The cavitation bubble that thing creates can get as hot as the sun blasting water at a speed of 1km/hr. Amazing. Wow. If that is what you have, that's awesome -- and I guess you'll be feeding it shrimp.

Pictures of the goby and pistol shrimp...
I'll post a pic of the dead peppermint later.. should I leave it in there and let it eat some with the hermits? The hermits are just loving it.

Where did you get it?
Can the pressure wave that this thing creates when it snaps danger your tank??

I asked my LFS to order it for me with the goby. Cost me around 45 dollars.
The video states that it can reach the temperature of the sun- I believe that is not true. It would melt sand at that temperature, would of probably fried my hermits by now. It probably paralized the peppermint, I believe that, but I don't believe it reachest the temperature of the sun.

The effect the pistol shrimp creates is called cavitation (death bubble). The mantis shrimp uses the same method to produce the force to kill its prey. Also how their able to hit with the force of a 22 cal bullet.

Seems like that could be pretty painful if it were to hit your hand What are the chances of it going for a fire shrimp, I'd like one in my tank but not if its going to eat my fire shrimp

I have owned a mantis for quite sometime now. It has broken a heater and split my fingernail twice. When he hits something at full force the cavitation bubble will actually create light. That is the energy being released now I know it does reach extremely high temps. I doubt it gets as hot as the surface of the sun though.

For the record, only the peacock mantis O. scyllarus an G. chriagra are strong enough to break glass. There are others, but they are rarely in the trade or rarely get to the sizes needed to break glass.

Thanks, Dan.
boomsticks -- Look at the links I've posted and do some research, scientists estimate of at least 5000K -- 780K more and you've got the Sun's surface temperature.
