Grass Shrimp?
Grass shrimp,
has anyone ever tried grass shrimg in their tank/fuge? There are usually lots of them near the jersey coast reeds/rushes, if you know where to look. I wonder if anyone ever tried them in therir tank? Edwin

I have heard of people collecting them from waters in Texas and Florida for use as live food. Some people even bred them. I don't know if shrimp found off of Jersey could stand tropical temps for any length of time though. Just try it and see!

I collect the grass shrimp out of the Gulf of Mexico or the intracoastal waterway all the time for my tanks. I drag a fine mesh net across the grass and come up with a gob of little shrimp. I rinse them off with fresh salt water at home before dumping them in my tank. They make good snacks for my larger fish and sometimes after lights out, I see their eyes shining around the rockwork in the tank.

How many do you put in your tank and do you have to acclimate them? I going to try them, see if they can help my sand bed, or are they omnivores? RevClyburn

I used to use them as food for my seahorses. They were excellent additions to the tank but didn't last long. Someone shipped me some from N. Carolina and I put them in my refugium which dumped directly into my large pond, but again, they didn't last long. They were cool while they lasted, though, just like little ghost shrimp, same size, but geared to salt water!

REVCLYBURN, I probably put 20 or 30 in at a time. Now mind you, these are very small shrimp, not the large edible ones. No, I don't acclimate them at all, just rinse and dump them in. I feed Cyclopeeze two or three times a week and assume that's what they eat. I occasionally see my fairy wrasse chasing them around and snacking on them.
