diy seio controller*speed controller
ok
not sure when im going to do this but i think this will be a good group project if we convert the 110 ac to 110 dc then use a dpdt ssr to alternate the dc current ( making a square wave ac current) we can get a similar effect. ( about 10 bucks i think) this in theroy should work the back end stuff is what i can not figure out how to controll the on and off time of this relay lil pict coming soon! ok since photbucket isnt working right now im hopping you all under stand what i am getting at
but it isnt hard to make a square wave maybe this belongs in rc's sub thread but this is somthing i am willing to dedicate alot of time to and some money ( hehe im broke) but by using a timer we should be able to decrease the on off time from 60 hz to what ever we want. ( or evenincrease it and blow up our pumps muahahahahaha)

From what i can understand, Seio powerheads are AC. If you want to control it, you need to modify the amplitude of the AC signal. The theory is fine. You need to go AC to DC then DC to AC. You can get the AC from the wall, convert it to DC then control DC output. This DC will in turn control the AC going into Seio. Hard part is, you're converting for AC to an adjustable DC. The adjustable DC is then reconverted back into adjustable AC amplitude. Just be careful when testing out your design. Power electronics is pretty dangerous stuff if you're not careful ^^.
But yes, in theory, it would work. |

i dont think i need to change anything in the wave besides the length of the wave ( of course it will no longer be a sine wave but we)

Oh sorry, I guess i didn't read the post complete, lol. If you adjust AC frequency, you should be able to control the speed of the motor.

You have to make a nice build thread with pictures, for electrical retards like me. : )

right now im working on programing the controll
i got a pickit2 from microchip i hae to learn assembaly O_O most annoying code in the world so far i can make a few leds flash on the test board. LOL the code that i need is SOOOOO simple! in c O_O but in this its a pita what still needs tobe done calculate switching speeds then find the program exacution time then find wha ti need to delay to have it work right all "work" so far is digital

here is the chip
http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/e...Doc/41262D.pdf for $1.20 it is dirt cheep! and its amazing the configurations you can do! most of the pins can be setup as input OR output and it can do digital input OR analog input ( using a volatage comparator so you can use things like temp probes) runs at 4mhz ( runs 1million instructions a second)

Why don't you switch to a 18fxxx and use C. Microchip has a student edition for C that is free.

i could use c with this one right now!
but the timing needs to be exact so using c wouldent work

Well I am also electrically handicapped, much like Mac Inger, but I am assuming that this would also work with the hydor koralia pumps since they are also AC pumps? I am very interested.

well before i post the final code. let me make sure it dosnt break the pumps lol
since we are using square wave instead of sine wave... not sure if its going to be a problom also still need to make somthing that will output a contant current dc rather then a varied current dc.... shouldent be hard to regulate!

Could this controller be made to turne the speed way down then back up again so the pump never completly stops. If so then it could be put in a box like a tunze wave maker right?

that is the goal vance
varried speed for varried times.

Well I don't know jack about electronics but I'd be willing to learn to save myself $500. I can build a box out of acrylic, been there done that!

Which chip is $1.20?

I hope it's not too hard.. I'm mentally challenged when it comes to putting this stuff together as well.. but I have a few Seios coming in the mail this week and I was going to throw them on my AC Jr until I read somewhere where they're not designed for wave makers.. so this will save me the $$$ of having to buy new pumps after I've destroyed these with the AC Jr!

How come you bought Seios? Koralias are much better. You can use Koralias on the Seio controller if the author of this thread cant get it to work.

I had koralias, they already burnt out on my AC Jr. since I didn't know it was a question worth asking. Now I know. Plus I got the Seios for a great deal (about 1/2 price) so I thought I'd give them a try.. it's good to try different options until you find the one you like!

Once ATTR gets the code working (thank you very much by the way) how much equipment is it going to take for a guy like me who has never done anything like this going to need?
