Thanks for the replies. If you'd like, you can check out my new thread which shows close-ups of my DIY sponge filter as well as the polyester filter product and its details. Would this help you in deciding if this product will be fine as a sponge filter?

My QT has been setup as of 8-10-04 with a sponge filter powered by a MJ-600 PH, 4 varying sizes of 2" ID PVC tubing, an LCD stick-on thermometer, full cover hood w/ modest flourescent bulb and an Ebo-Jager 75W heater set at 78F. On 8-12-04, I added a 1oz pack of Bio-SPIRA at 9:00 p.m. (good for up to 20 gallon tanks) and added a cube of mysis shrimp so the bacteria could feed off of the ammonia. A pic of my QT can be viewed below:

QT as of 8-15-04

3 days later on 8-15-04, I did a 10% water change and tested the QT's water parameters and received the following results:

Salifert Results:

- Nitrate: 18 ppm
- Nitrite: 0.14 ppm
*- Alkalinity: 3.54 meq/L
*- KH: 9.9 dKH
- Ca: n/a
- Ammonia: 0 mg/L

Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Results:

- Nitrate: 15 ppm
- Nitrite: 0.10 ppm
- Ammonia: 0 mg/L
- pH: ~7.9

*: I tested KH because of the low pH. I'll dose (via DIY doser) diluted limewater tonight to stabilize pH w/out altering the KH too much.

- pH: 7.94 (Pinpoint pH Monitor from DT)
- 1.026 spg || 36% salinity (refractometer)
- Temp: 80F average

In a tank w/out the bacteria, the ammonia spike would start around Day 1 if I'm not mistakened with its apex aruond day 10. The Nitrite spike would start around Day 4 with its apex around Day 27 and Nitrate spike starting around Day 28. The specifics are taken from Robert M. Fenner's The Conscientious Marine Aquarist JIC you were wondering where I got the specific data.

I would assume that with my current test results as of Day 3, the Bio-SPIRA product has survived and is feeding effectively off of the ammonia the decaying mysis shrimp are giving off. Would you agree and if so, how long would you assume it would take for the tank to cycle with a bacterial colony within the sponge able to sustain the addition of my first fish for its 4(+) week acclimation period? I'll do some more tests for the next three days to see how things are coming along, but would like to know what you think or how close my tank would be to cycling. BTW, since I read 0 mg/L of Ammonia, I put in another cube of mysis shrimp as of 8-15-04 to give the bacteria something to feed on.
