When drilling and assembling the rock, how long can the pieces be out of the water with no harm done?

Keep them wet and you should be ok.

that looks nice too! how big would you say your rocks are (i.e. 6" x 6", etc). i have a 70g i have to set up and i need to know what size rocks would be best. (tank is 36" long x 18" deep).

Yeah around 6x6.just be careful not to drill to close to the edge, they will crumble. Use the smallest pillar you can get away with,I used 1/2 cpvc,so I had to use a 5/8 drill bit.pretty big.next time I may order some smaller acrylic rods.I was in a hurry this time and didnt want to wait so I just headed to home depot and picked up whatever i could find.

I was on US Plastics and was wondering what the difference between extruded acrylic rod and acrylic round rod is other than a couple dollars per foot. Are both reef safe?

that is a towel. I put it down to protect the bottom glass when I put my structures in there. I drilled, and built them in the garage, the put them in the tank to make sure I was happy with them.
I will be curing them at my LFS in one of his 300g systems. this way once its done, I can add it back, 60g of his water, and fill the rest with fresh sw, and skip 98% of the cycle.
