Protein Skimmer Confusion

i'm thoroughly confused (which doesn't take much!) . i'm trying to protein skimmer shop and i'm wondering if you can help narrow it down for it me a little bit. maybe a few fail-safe brands, or if its easier, a list of "steer-clears." it'll be for a 240 gallon tank (96x24x25), mixed reef, and it'll be in-sump. i've been hearing that octopus and euro-reef are good, but what about the larger aquaCs, the kents, the PMs? and i've seen a lot of the berlin's for sale. is that because people hate them and want something else? how can they be suitable for 25 to 250 gallons?? should i be looking for something with the needle wheel? thanks!

Aqua C, Euro Reef, Octopus or ASM, are all very good skimmers. I love Aqua C for there support. I hear Euro Reef is excellent also. I might try the rs-135 for my 90g.

Good Luck

Is this going to be a heavy bioload tank?

thanks for the help! not a real heavy bioload as far as fish go, but yeah, i'd like to have a good many sps/lps.

is the high cost of the euro-reef justified? for the 250g, it runs around $1K, where the aqua-c runs about half that.

what about the becketts, down drafts, or venturis?

i guess that its mainly a personal preference? i just don't understand the big differences between them all. thanks!

the euro reef rs250 is 499.00 here in canada it will be cheaper or the same in the states....
i dont agree with octopus...they are knock offs and dont work as good from what i read.

euro reef is worth the money...deltec and euro reef are top two forsure. you will love you re euro reef. i am looking to upgrade my euro reef 135 to the 250...
stay clear of precision marine skimmers they just plain suck....

dont cheap out on a skimmer...its probably the most important piece of equip you will buy for you re tank.
big diff between them all is performance and how often you have to play with them...euro reef and deltec you set and forget...precision marine on the other hand has done more damage to my house that i would like to admit....they suck!

Yes, do not cheap out on skimmers, they are really important. Deltec makes a very good skimmer. Euroreef also makes excellent skimmers.

You really can't go wrong with either of the two. I have a euro reef rs 135 and love it.

Not sure how the larger Aqua-C work, I do have the EV- 180 on my tank and it works well and easy to adjust and service. Main thing is- like these guys are sayin' - do not skimp on the skimmmer! I would recomend buying a larger rated skimmer for the size of your tank and bio load. My EV-180 for instance, is on a 50 gallon tank and is rated for much more than that.

I'm also in the market for a skimmer and a friend recommend and MTC-HSA 500. Are MTC skimmers considered very good or in the same class as Euroreef and Deltec? The MTC 500 cost $600
