peppermint shrimp

Ok i just bought some pepper mint shrimp in hopes they would eat aiptasia. Well they hide during the day i turned on the light at night and i saw one eating one of my astrea snails. They i began to look at tha tank and noticed theres at least 3 shells empty since i put the shrimps in. Anyone have this happen? Aren't they supposed to be reef safe? thanks, james

It depends on if you really got peppermint shrimp. There are similar looking shrimp that are always sold as peppermint shrimp that are not reef safe. Compare the stripes on your shrimp to a photo of a peppermint shrimp.

Peppermint shrimp are scavengers so the snail may have already been dead. If an astrea snail falls on the sand they can not right themselves, so they either die or become an easy target for hermit crabs, etc.

There are more then three types of peppermint shrimp and the ones that look like this are really good aiptasia hunters...

Notice the stripes and the eyes are very close together. You do NOT want camel shrimp that have a 90 degree hump on their backs.

I bought 2 a week ago from a local lfs and have not seen an aptasia since the day after I bought them. They look just like the picture that CompNrdCR posted.

So from what I have seen in my own setup, I went from hunting aptasia every week to make sure they didn't get out of control to being able to enjoy my tank more.

Best of luck with yours,

Chris

Peppermint shrimp are totally nocturnal and will rid your tank of aptasia. They are reef safe and don't bother other tank mates.
