Epoxy forms

When people form things in epoxy, what do they use for the actual form so it doesn't stick to it

If you are talking about making a simple block or something like that then just about anything that's smooth and coated with some kind of release agent will work. I've even used tupperware coated with Pam.

For more complex things, like duplicating irregular shaped parts, you need to make a mold. Either a 1-part or 2-part mold depending on complexity of the part.

I made simple molds back in my model building days by pressing a master into a blob of clay and then pouring resin into the impression.

But for more complex stuff I've had to step up to a 2-part silicone rubber compund and plaster to make a mold.

It's not difficult when you have the proper materials. If you go to page 5 of my gallery and look at my pier piling you will see all the barnnacles and mussels that were cast while sitting at my dining room table over the span of a few evenings.

Did you make the piling too or just the barnacles?

Just the the decorations. The bare bones piling was professionally done.

It's really not as daunting as it might look. A bit expensive if you need part of it professionally done as I did with the piling. But there are any number of things that you can find around the house to use. Something like a discarded beer bottle with some resin barnnacles growing on it would be a good starter project.

Your local art supply store has the acrylic paint, the casting materials came from MircroMark.com and the barrnacles and mussels came form David L. Manwarren corp. (DLM)Simple castings are not the difficult to produce once you have a decent master. For painting you can easily snag pics off the internet to use as a reference.

Until I tried this project I had only made castings on a very small scale - a couple parts here and there. So this really was a trial and error kind of project.

I things the biggest stumbling block when people think of trying something like this is that it kind of looks a bit overwhelming and they don't know where to start.
