to much lighting
Im looking for a light system and I found a nice one with 380W metal halid is that so much for a 20 gallon.

in my opinion, YES!! Why not upgrad to a....lets say 90 gal??

WEll im in the army and 90 gallons it to much to work with even more so when I leave and my mom takes care of my tank so yea.

What corals are you planning? If you're sticking with softies, there's no need for MH lighting.

It would be too much for a 20-gallon tank. If you want to use MH on that sized tank....use a pendant fixture that will hold a 150 or 175-watt MH bulb.

I never had HM balbs before but is it like any normal light like i can down grade if i want

You should target 5 - 10x tank volume for lighting wattage... so for a 20 gallon tank you should lok to have between 100 - 200 watts of light. This is only a guideline, but the 380w seems way to powerful. The critical question is what do you wantto keep and how light demanding is it? Some clams and sps might enjoy high wattage lighting whereas mushrooms and softies are going to be p!$$ed. One option with mh lighting is you can physically raise the light in teh air further away from the tank to reduce its effect and have the capability to upgrade the tank later.

you canŽt put smaller bulbs in 38W ballast. They only work for 380W. What are you planing to keep in your tank?

Well an anemone is harder to keep then most corals. what kond of lightin have you got currently?

your biggest issue is going to be heat and evaporation. How do you plan to cool the tank and topoff evaporation.
imo, go with a 175w, or even 250w max

Yes 130W is ideal iŽd say. One thing i must add. If your going MH then iŽd consider having t-5 actnic as well.

I have a fan going over the top to help cool off An i check my tank all the time for evap which is pretty slow normal I dont have to add water for about 2-3 days

I also have a fan over the tank which worked wonders during the summer, it saved my tank! IŽwould try to get 100-150W MH and 2X24 w t-5 25000K actnic. those are my 2 cents
