Does Selcon go bad?

I havn't used it for about 6 months, it separated, after some shaking it seems ok. But there is some black gunky stuff stuck on the dropper. wiped it off now.. didn't smell foul but I want to know if they are still safe to use or not?

I would think if it says refrigerate that it goes bad.

Prob 6 months expiration I would say.

If it was not in a refrigerator dump it. I always keep mine cold and its usually used up within a couple of months. Why chance it, just buy a new bottle.

Interesting the Selcon label makes no mention of refrigeration or shelf life.

Look at it like you would your own food. If you opened a box of cereal and there was some mold growing on the top would you pour off the top layer then chow down, or would you toss the whole bag?

Cheese is an obvious exception to this rule

I have never refrigerated it and have been using it for over 6 months. The label does not say to refrigerate. I'm sure it has some sort of shelf life but why would you refrigerate vitamins?

I just found this on the web

http://www.marineaquariumadvice.com/optimal_health.html

"Regularly soak the foods in a good vitamin supplement. Alternate this will Selcon™ which will provide essential HUFA or highly-unsaturated fatty acids. HUFA spoils quickly so keep it, vitamins and non-frozen foods in a refrigerator."

There is also a thread over a reefland where someone claimed to have spoke with American Marine about this;

"Spoke with the folks at American Marine (Selcon Mfg) today and asked about the life span of their product. Once opened, he estimated a 9-12 month life span (based on this, I will probably toss out the bottle 9-12 months after purchase). Though refrigeration will not harm the product, he recommended against it as the ingredients may not go back into solution when shaken. They suggested a cool, dry ambient location for storage. When you notice black spots throughout the bottle, it has gone bad and should be tossed."

I believe the post advised against refrigeration unless I misread. I refrigerated mine, and it began to clump. I now can't get the clumps to dissolve into the mix anymore. Premium Aquatics actually shipped mine with a cooling pack, but that was the middle of the summer.
