Hey Bronco,
Thanks. As far as special ordering stuff goes I am not too concerned about that... just the problem we all have of finding females. I tend not to get my fish from LFS anymore because it seems they think they need to charge 2.5x what it should cost. I have been ordering fish for years anyway, albeit it was usually discus, killifish or apistos. As far as the multicolor goes, not a bad trade off if you ask me. They are a beautiful fish. Some time look up a blue-black phase potter's. That is my holy grail. Hiroyuki Tanaka has a very small picture of one floating around the internet. It's good to know that she doesn't beat up on the wrasses at all as that was my main concern. I was originally wanting the flames due to the fact that I was thinking of doing just hawaiian fish. Now, I am not so sure. I am really liking the Rhomboids too. I have a while to figure it all out and plan on keeping my options open until the tank is ready anyway. And that will be a while yet. All I can say about the seahawks is at least they can cover steve smith... more than my beloved bears seemed to want to do. |

Today I had a LFS near me put a fairy wrasse on hold for me. Thing is, I dont know what kind it is and he doesnt either. I havent actually seen the fish or even a picture - he just described it as looking like a lineatus/?? (I forget what he said there, possibly scott's, but then again it could just be that I was still hung up about how he had sold the scott's I was interested in - the reason I called - and still had scott's on the brain). He also said it came from Vanuatu. I'll be seeing it tomorrow, but I'd like to have at least an idea of what it might turn out to be before I leave and quite possibly bring it home. Oh and I didnt ask about the price, forgot, so I cant tell what it could be from that. So my question is, what are some lineatus-looking (the reflective specks I suppose) fairies from Vanuatu? If there's quite a few, what has been comming in more commonly lately?

Marcel,
I had several tank photos up on this thread a while back. I started deleting those photos because I had all these new fish pictures to insert in my gallery and I needed space for that. Currently I'm working on trying to put together a short video of my main tank featuring the Johnsonis. Is there a way that Reef Central will allow me to load a short video on a forum post? If not I'll have to see how I can get a third party web site to try and host my short video. Then I'll provide a link. Let me try and work through this if possible. I'll try bringing back some tank pictures to my gallery as soon as I can |

douglasnj,
For that last picture I posted I'm using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ10 12xZoom leica lens digital. It's a great camera but I'd like to get a bit more professional with my picture taking so I am looking into moving up to a Nikon D50 Digital SLR with a 60mm Nikkor Macro lens and a Hot shoe flash. This will allow me to get crisper shots in low light with intense closeups of the fish. Even if the fish move around a lot........like wrasses typically do. I'm doing my homework right now and price shopping. I'm planning a trip to Italy soon and I'll be going to the aquarium in Genoa. I want to have my camera by then so I can get some great shots. |

I don't know if you can take better pictures than you currently do, But hey, I open to be a judge. LOL.. I have the Minolta 7D. Its great and I had a lot of lenses from my older Minolta SLR. I need to practice on tank shots.
I was in Genoa a few years back. A business/friend of mine has a house there and had bought a new boat, so we drove from Parma to Genoa for a few hour of crusing around. Great restaurant on one the highest points in the city. Great views of the city and harbor. Cant remember the name, but I'll get it for you. You will love the city. |

I know I've asked this before, but can I get a list of fairy wrasses that you personally think are suitable for a 40 gallon reef tank?
I really want a scotts, but I believe earlier I was told not to because although they are around the same size as other wrasses, they need more swimming room?

Matt, I read through this thread again last night and I believe the words were "it would be criminal to keep an adult scott's in a 40 gallon" . Or something on that order .
Most 3-4" fairies would do fine in your tank though, and that's a lot of options there. Look on this page (not in english, but there's pictures, names, and sizes!) http://www.meerwasser-lexikon.de/de/...Lippfische.htm Lots of Cirrhilabrus species to look through. |

haha ok just checkin :P
How about this, if I was to get only fairy wrasses from this point on (only have a small false perc clownfish) I would think 2 would be fine, but 3 would be pushing it? If I got either 3 different smaller cirrhilabrus wrasses, or one male 2 females of the same species. I'm thinking three would be pushing it, but maybe if I chose a smaller/smallest species of fairy wrasse or even flasher wrasse?

Another random fairy wrasse related question - Has anyone heard of these or does anyone have one? I've never heard of them and they seem pretty rare for that price.

Brian Greene, who collected Bronco's Johnsonis, has a few for sale if you're looking for one. The way he takes care of his fish you'd be hard pressed to find healther specimens and his prices are great. |

Thank you for the information. I'm not looking to purchase one, I just had never seen it before, and it was the most expensive fairy wrasse I've seen, so I was wondering if it was really rare or what.
I've heard of Brian Greene's excellent fish catching and handling and might order a different wrasse from him soon

Hey Bronco,
I'm planning on setting up a 94g. cube SPS tank{L-30in. W-30in. H-24in.}. I love all the fairies, but I'm thinkin' about choosing my favorite species and doing one large harem. They will be the centerpiece with just a few more species of fish for fun. Thanks to your beautiful pictures, it just so happens that my favorite fairy is C. johnsoni. How would you go about making a large harem of this fish? I have heard of supermales. Is there any way to get a fairy to reach this size in an aquarium. Thanks for any help. P.S.- Thanks for sharing all your knowledge so we could borrow it! |

I also know that this would cost me a bundle, but if they were pretty much the only fish in the tank I might do it!

JeremyT,
This is the first time I own a Johnsoni but I have a Labout's that I have grown from 2" to 4.5". True full grown supermales of any breed are easier bought than raised to that size in a captive system. I'm not saying it's not possible but the easier route is by purchase. Brian Greene may be an excellent source for this because he is committed to selling his fish with females. Most fairy wrasses begin life as females when they are fry or juveniles. So if you can get many juveniles and then one large male that should serve you well. Check with Brian, that is of course if you want a Marshall Isalnd species as a harem. |

Bronco, great can't wait to see all those fish together. I just got a Labout's, everything went great with the acclimation, but, i had delayed aggression by my solarensis. he started chasing my Labouti relentlessly for a good 20 mins. Good thing the Labouti, and i must say i was amazed, started standing up for himself and turned the tables. Now everyone is happy except i noticed some ich on the Labouti now. Probably due to the stress. Hope it will just go away. I have had minor out breaks before with no fish loss, I just let it run its course. The ich usually falls off after a couple of days with no ill effects on the fish. Hope this is the case this time, we will just have to wait and see.

Bronco -
What is this wrasse? I have been back and forth about it. Is it a solar wrasse or a blue sided fairy wrasse? I found this page: http://www.petsolutions.com/Blue+Sid...I-C-78-C-.aspx What do you think, and how available are females of this species? Thanks. |

That does look like a Blue-sided wrasse (Cirrhilabrus cyanopleura) to me...

Would I be able to keep a Labouti, Lubbocks or other fairy wrasses with this guy? How about flashers? He is a BIG Wrasse, easily 5 inches.
I understand the whole size/color staggering idea, but noone has commented on the Blue-sided wrasse and compatability. Thanks! |

Well, as an update, the lineatus looking fairy turned out to be a pink margin. Gorgeous colors in him and wow, lookit that, he snuck home with me!
Here he is eyeing a tasty looking mysis shrimp nearby, which he soon devoured . |
