Turtle Grass
Does anyone have any experience with turtle grass in their tanks? I'd really like some, but my sand bed is only about 2-1/2 - 3" deep. I was looking at the Florida Pets website, and they are recommending at least 6" deep sand bed. I'd really appreciate your input, or any other similar grass that could go in this sand bed.
Thanks, Dave

I tried 2 times with Turtle Grass and was not able to establish it. This was in a tank with over 6" of well-aged sand. Shoal grass or Star grass would be much easier, especially in shallower sand, IMO/IME.

3D-reef is doing really well with Thallasia ( turtle grass ). http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...readid=1095208
It is surviving in my tank and occasionally sending up new shoots. i wish I could know the secret. I have a 6 inch sand bed which was fairly well established before adding the grass, and experimented with dosing various things, but for now its just water changes and fish feeding.

dclaghorn,
I agree with FP,the sand should be at least 4-6" for turtle grass. You will want to be careful with the rhyzomes(roots) because they are very brittle.Use Your hand to loosen up the sand, kinda vibrate it back and forth. I came across a good read today while looking up some info. Here Another one hereURL=http://www.sms.si.edu/IRLSpec/Thalas_testud.htm]here[/URL] 20reefer,Glad to here Yours is doing so well!!How long have You had turtle grass?[

After mostly dying back, my Thalassia are sprouting new leaves (one in the center of the pic...the others not visible).
The tank will be 3 months old next week. -R |

Dave,
It's about 6" deep where the Thalassia are. It's all Aragamax, the bottom 2" or so mixed with mineral mud. -R |
