Hippo tang black stripes changing color ?

my hippo tang has always been very happy, he is very fat and has a spastic like personality. lately ive noticed his color seems to change very rapidly like within a few seconds. his black stripes turn a dull gray and his blue fades as well, he then quickly returns to normal ... is this normal ?

Faded colors in Tangs usually indicates some sort of stress. Has anything changed lately...new additions, water chemistry, lighting, etc?

Not Necessarily...I had a hippo tang for many years and if I wore a certain color and was next to the tank, his black stripe would start flashing to yellow to the point that it would match its tail. His blue never faded though. Other tangs are known to change colors depending on mood.

If the blue turns dull for a long period of time, the fish could be stressed, but if it is flashing, I think it is somewhat normal...

That's really interesting. Mine has never done anything like that. Though, I would think if yours was "flashing" depending on what shirt you were wearing, perhaps certain colors were in fact stressing the fish.

i could be wrong but i think somewhere i read that hippo tangs do that according to their sex and mating issues.

They are able to change colors quite rapidly. This is especially true say, in the morning when the lights first come on. Mine (before being eaten by my sea anemone, after six years) would even have a big white spot. It would then disappear after a few minutes. Also, because of the scales, when these fish turn at a certain angle, they have a different color, usually less vibrant (i.e. gray on the black stripes). If these colors are consistent, then you may have a stressed fish.
