+++++Ever Had DINOFLAGELLATES? L@@K here+++

Ok. Theses bugs are driving many reefers out of the hobby! I have seen tons of folks around here on RC ready to let their tanks crash because they are out of options.....DONT GIVE UP!

I think it would be helpful to create a thread ( database) and try to see if the reefers who have or had dinos share"something" in common.
Who knows maybe its something as simple as temp, or the type of LR we have.

PLAN: Create a thread that list things that may vary from reef to reef allowing dinos to thrive, it could be anything. We can use this thread to come up with the different variables, then create another to list the variables collect the data in an organized manner.

There are people here who have beaten these dinos!!!!!!!!

Heres what I would like to add to the list, after I get a nice list together, I will repost another thread so I can opll everyone.
1. Type of salt you use
2. City or Tap water
3. Lights you use
4. What substrate do you use?
5. Have you ever used Red slime type remover products to kill CYANO?
6. Where is your LR from?
7. At what age of your tank did you get dinos?
8.What temp do you run your reef?
9.Have you ever cured your tank of dinos?
10. What has made the dinos better, but not disapear
11. Did increasing ph help?

DO NoT ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS. Add questions to the list so I can repost them.

How heavy is your bioload?
How much do you feed and how often?
How often do you change water?

melev, this has been a ten month battle, I can assure you its not a nutrient issue here.
In a 55 I have never had more than 2 fish. 1 clown that I do not feed and a tang that stays on the thin side I feed nori. All parameters are perfect.
Melev, I tried to email you about this issuse yesterday, I guess it didnt go through. I really admire your skills and was wondering if you had input on this problem. I invite toy to skim through my threads. GLAD YOUR HERE.

No disrespect here, but it you dont know what they are, I can bet you prob havent had them! Dinos release toxic stuff that kills inverts.

Having beat Dinoflagellets, I also think it is important to know what kind of treatments have been used (sort of covered with the cyano treatments) and general tank parameters. I look forward to the posting of the questions so we can see if there are some general trends. In researching dinos, I found many a thread where people gave up and started over or just got out of the hobby.

I 'm Dinoholic.

I have a problem i'm Dinoholic i can not stop growing them.
They been with me about a year now this is not the first time i got them i know when they are with me they always kill my snails and from that i get a cyno outbreak till the skimmer suck all the organics up. it takes the skimmer about a month to clean all of the cyno, is not that the skimmer is no good the snails die slowly one or two everyday.
This last time was the worst i never saw them this thick.
I have a good size skimmer and good load of fish .
My P04 is 0.01 i run a fuge with tumbling cheato and 1 litter of rowa in a reactor i change the Rowa when the P04 is no longer 0 when coming out from the Rowa reactor with colorimeter.
My N03 is 0-1 no more than that ever.
I keep my Mag about 1350.
I try different settings with my ALK from NSW of 7-8 DKH up to 12 DKH i usually try to keep it around 9 DKH but any way i try to keep higher and lower slowly change it for three weeks at a time But it did not help any.
Usually now my PH is about 8.1 in the AM and up to 8.3 in the PM.
In the summer time with the AC on and all the widows close the PH was getting low about 7.8-7.9 but after after i built the new sump/fuge with Cheato the PH now will never gets any lower than 8.1 in the AM and 8,3 in the pm in reverse day light cycle.
I drip Kalk in a DYI container two times a day about four gallons of Kalk slowly.
I try to raise my ph for two weeks to 8.5-8.6 trying to kill the dinos but they never fade.
The Dinos always come and go quickly they usually last about three months but this time looks like i'm going to have them for good . My sps doing good some of them growing ok some just completely stop growing .
I lost about 35 Large turbo snails and about 100 asteras snails .
Other than that no losses with fish or shrimps .
I feed the tank one or two times a day i don't over feed the tank but i feed the fish enough so they look healthy.

Im wondering if treating Cyno with red slime remover or chemi clean kills good bacteria that may have prevented dinos????

-Have you reseeded your tank with new LR after Cyano treatment to reintroduce bacteria killed with the chemicals?

-Have you encouraged a cyano or diatom bloom to compete with the dinos?

Lets get some more questions.......We have people here to testify they have beaten DINOS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I treat my tank with chemi-clean but i had some dinos back then i don't remember if the dinos got out of hand after that or not .
You may have something there.

I do not think some of the variables that you listed can be considered because they contain variables in themselves. For example, salt mix. I believe that individual salt packs, can be different, even though they are the same salt mix brand. The average responses posts on this forum, will show too narrow of a scope. In order for that to be accurate, I believe 1000's would have to reply to show a grater average. Not enough people will reply for that question. Therefore, I believe it should not be considered in the final conclusion.

True, and IO is by far the most popular salt brand on the market, so many people who have dinos will use IO.

Dont worry Im not a politician. We can discuss all of this when the data is compiled.
