Inducing Clowns to spawn
I have a pair of ocellaris clowns I have been trying to get to spawn for about a year and a half now. They have been in a 29g tank to themselves for atleast two years at this point and still have not spawned. I have had luck with my tomato clowns they spawn regulary about twice a month but just cant get the ocellaris to get down to business. What they heck is going on, I know they are bonded but they just won't do anything. Should I put some Spanish Fly in their tank or what? I have tried the following....
1. set the temp to 81 degrees 2. Saturated feedings, live, flake, you name it.. 3. Put a night light by their tank 4. Light cycle at 12 hours a day changed it to 14 for awhile still did nothing. 5. Did a few large water changes 6. Moved SG to 1.020 for awhile usually keep the tank at 1.023. I am at a loss here, any suggestions would be appreciated. |

No idea how to help you.
Just to let you know - I bought my 2 maroon clowns in January 2002 as tiny youngsters and the first time they spawn was about 3 weeks ago. They did lay eggs on a rock next to their bubble tip anemone. I planned to catch the fry but I missed the hatching. Then I placed a tile covering their old nesting spot and they laid eggs for the second time Monday on the tile. So I calculate mine needed 3 and 1/2 years to do their first attempt. Maybe yours need some more time together ? Do yours have their anemone or any other host in the tank or are they free swiiming in the whole tank volume? |

They have a tile tent they are hosting in.

First stop changing things... The main key to getting spawns is consistancy. Lighting and water parameters including SG and temp can not change. If you move any of those in a tank with a spawning pair you can throw them for a minimum of about 30 days. So, when trying to get a pair to spawn stability is even more important.
I also put a tarp infront of their tanks so nothing they can see outside changes.

Consistency is extremely key. And if you can't be bothered with tarps for the tanks just stop cleaning the front glass.

Is two degrees between night and day too much temp change for spawning? How about just for your display tank?

Two degrees might be a little too much swing on a daily basis.
