Putting Sand In a Canister
I am wondering is this ok to do or would the pump pull the sand to the tank? I am thinking of converting my canister to a refugium with rock rubble. So can I add sand? And would you do it?

Not to be blunt but refugiums need light and the best place to keep the sand is on the bottom of the tank. If you don't have a sump for a fuge, there are Aquafuge's that are HOB. I know its not easy when you are getting started we all have been there. Just try and read as much as you can about the subject from notable authors like Sprung, Debleek, Borneman etc. to give you ideas and info. There are many different methods that work. Also be careful on following the advice people post. Some is good, some is mediocre and some is just plain old crap. Again read and research. Good luck and have fun with it. Mile.

I do not plan on keeping cheato in the canister so light is not needed. Just want to grow pods in there "Dark Refugium". I am just curious if sand would be wise to put in there.

When I first got a diamond goby it moved LOTS of sand near the intake of my rena canister filter. When I opened it up to do weekly maintenence I found almost 2 inches of sand in the canister. The sand stayed put once it was sucked in, so I believe your idea would work if thats what you really want to do.
I agree there are better ways to do this, but hey, if you got an extra canister filter why not? I think it could work. |

Most canisters are designed to have flow going through every area of the enclosure. Sand really has no place to stay put in a canister filter and would either get sucked through the pump or at best the sand that did not get sucked through would become a fluidized sand filter, which would not be very helpfull..
Now if you just used rock rubble it would be doable, but still debatable if it would really be a good cryptic zone environment considering it would be high flow (from all I have read, high flow is NOT a good area for cryptic zones, and a poered filter takes this to the extreme) and might trap more detrius than the small pod population in that high flow environment could handle. Due to it basically being a power filter straining the water with rock rubble would make cleaning it essential and that is not a good thing (a cryptic zone should really be left undisturbed)....... You could also use pod piles within the tank if your primary goal is to allow a safe haven for pods. The mandarin article has a few tips on pod piles.
