UV sterilizer suggestion?
I'll be upgrading tanks soon and am in the market for a UV filter that can accommodate up to a 240Gallonish tank. I'll be placing an order for a Pan World 200ps soon from Marine Depot. Based on what Marine Depot offers:

i personally am not a huge fan of sterilizers, you lose some good stuff by using them, they raise heat and i personally think they are a pain sometimes. anyway i owned a lifeguard uv that was 3 feet tall i think dr.foster and smith carried it. it would run up to a 600 gallon tank. they were great uv's if i were to suggest any... other than that i haven't heard many horror stories cause it's kinda hard to actually say how well they do and don't work because we really don't see them work.

Hmmm... well... I have a 8w UV on my 58gal tank right now. All I know about UV filters is that water definitely gets more clear when running it vs not. Also, I've had ICH before... running a UV filter remedied the situation fairly quickly without breaking down the reef to qt the fish.
Without arguing the validity of them (oops I just did), any other suggestions from the one's Marine Depot carries? |

I used the powerful 57watt compact version from AquaUV. These are teh best built sterilizers and the customer service from AquaUV is excellent. It is worth the money.
However, I must also caution that UV sterilizers should only be used continuosly on FOWLR systems or sparingly on reef systems. I had mine plumbed on a reef system and would only run it when I had signs of infection or increased polution in the water. I sold it after only using it twice in two years.

I would recomend A gamma UV sterilizer 40 watt or bigger.
if you ball it down slow the 40 watt is almost 3' long. I think it will fry all parasites. They are nice to plumb in. They have 2" slips in them with 1" female threads. I have mine running in line with my chiller. I to have had bad experiences with UV sterilizers like electrical fires. Thanks to lifegaurd. I keep one cause of having A heavy fish load and tangs. That model is not that bad for heat either. I also have allot of SPS so it zaps some pods,big deal they breed like crazy,especially if you have A decent fuge. |

I have never used a UV sterilizer, but I plan to on my next tank.
Considering an aquarium is a closed enviroment where free floating single celled organisms (bacteria and algae) can quickly reach concentrations that greatly exceed anything found in nature, I think UV sterilizers make sense. Imagine being in a crowded elevator or airplane when someone sneezes (versus a forest). I don't think they can kill parasites or copepods. Which is probably good for both FOWLR and reef tanks since the fish live on the pods. During an Ich outbreak, eliminating free floating bacteria and other opportunistic smaller organsims can help your fish survive. I am putting this one on my 500 gallon (total volume) system with plans to run it intermittantly. http://www.fishtankshop.com/index.as...D&ProdID=36625 I got this one because the plumbing works and I like the idea of the wiper gimmick!
