sump issues

I'm in the process of setting up a 55g reef. Well its been set up for 3 months now. It just needs live stock. The only thing in there now is about 1.5" of ls (i plan on adding more) and a baha hermit. But my question is what is the best way to setup a sump/refugium. I plan on turning a 20g into one but I'm getting mixed answers as where to put the skimmer. I hear that if I place it before the refuge it will suck all the nutrients out from it and if I but it after it won't be as efficient. So that's where I'm confused at. Also how in the world can pods survive in the fuge and make it to the main tank without being incinerated by the return pump

Also what would be a good combo of MH and VHO if I plan to keep and assrtment of corals. Would a low K MH. Work best or high same with the VHO's

I have my skimmer in the portion of the fuge where the main tank drains. I put the macro and some rubble rock in the center portion of the sump and the return pump in the last section of the sump for return of the water to the main system (after a trip through my chiller). It seems to be working fine for me.
