Phosphate Remover

So, I've been using Sea Chem Phosguard... It works just fine, but you can't use it 24/7, and really I don't like having to test for phosphates so often... I was thinking about switching to either Rowaphos or Two Part Solution's Ferric Oxide... Also with the TPS Ferric oxide, I was wondering between Granules and Pellets... I'm going to add the two types of TPS together as far as my final tally, but I want to see which gets more votes... LMK what you all think...

TIA,
Randy

Warner Marine PHOsR and Warner Marine PHOsR HC. IMO one of the best out there.

I have been using phos-ban brand GFO for the last few months, but I am going to be switching to the two part brand granules in the next change of media. I did not like the phos ban brand because it's granules are too fine and they break up easily and travel out into the tank/sump. I don't know how the two part brand will be yet, but I'm hoping better, because I bought a whole gallon of it.

Is HC worth the extra $$ over just PHOsR?

edit: marine depot carries it.

Ok, I just read up a bit on the PHOsR... Is it any different than the pelleted ferric oxide Two Part Solution sells??? Just wondering???

It costs twice as much but adsorbs three times as much. It can be used in a reactor with higher flow as the media is denser and does not break apart so easily.

I have yet to really get any info on the TPS pellets. I have been using them on my tank for 3 months and I have DEF noticed a reduction in algae on my glass. I have never really had any other algae problems. My colors still look great so really w/out a hanna its kind of hard to say how good it REALLY is. But from the looks of things, changing the media monthly has kept my tank pretty damn free of Po4.....

I will have to give the warner marine HC ($.0950/gram) a try but it is 3 times the price of 2part. ($.0318/gram) I sort of like not worring about dumping it to early so in some regards, cheeper is better

from all the research on independant test ive done rowa. works a little faster (only a few hours) and last a little longer (only a day or two) more than phosban.and comparing phosban to phoslock was a similar result.i havent read anything on the other brands, those test were enough to convince me GFO is GFO.therefore price is the only factor i look at.my choice is drs.fosters and smith phospure.

6th that.

I've used Rowa, phosban, FaunaMarin UltraPhos and PHOSaR HC.

It is pretty close between the FaunaMarin and the PHOSaR HC, the UltraPhos is by far the easiest to rinse and performs comparably to Rowa and phosban but does last a little longer then them. By performing comparably I mean that it keeps my phosphates at 0.03 on my Hanna and Merck kits (yes, I run two phosphate test kits - that's just the way I am).

The PHOSaR HC has now been running longer then any of the previous media has in the past and is able to keep my phosphates at 0.01 (on both kits)

I'll add my two cents.

I have used Phosban, Rowa, Phosar, and Phosguard and have made the decision to use Phosar going forward. The Phosguard was a little bit cheaper, but it was much "dirtier" than Phosar, by which I mean it took a lot more to rinse it. Since time is bigger concern to me than money, I won't use the Phosar.

Testing with a Hanna meter, I found that for the most part they where all pretty much interchangeable. There where differences, but the difference was also reflected in price on the high end. i.e. I found that Rowaphos was more efficient than say Phosban, but than again the Rowaphos cost more and the cost was about the same to remove the same amount of phosphate from the system.

I have not used the Phosar HC yet. I have a sample of it laying around someplace, but I am in between tanks and haven't tried it yet. (I had a small fire in my house that took out my 65, and I am in the middle of setting up a 225g.

Do you like your Hanna Phosphate Colorimeter??? Do you have the low range??? Just want to make sure they're accurate before I shell out that kind of money...

I love my Hanna. It is the low range. As far as accuracy goes, it is always the same as the Merck. People say that in the very low end (under 0.03 ppm) they are no longer accurate, if that is the case then the same should be said for the DD Merck as I have always found them to correlate really well in this range as well.

I think that a high end phosphate test is important, but the DD Merck will do you just as well, it is just harder to use and read and I feel that the extra expense is worth the digital readout you get with Hanna.

Also the reagent comes prepackaged so you don't have to worry about multiple steps, just dump and mix.
