cooking sps not a good idea.

This is what happens when your tank cooks for 12 hrs unattended!

87 degrees about 4 weeks back and unfortunately my porites took the worst of it. Gave it a fighting chance but no go.

Since then backup chiller going online as well as aquatronica now online and shutting my MH's at 83 if it ever happens again.
About volleyball size colony.

Crazy - my tank has been hitting 86-87 nearly everyday this summer (every hot day, at least) and nothing has happened to any of my corals or inhabitants, perhaps your thermometer is off and it was really hotter?? The tool I use I know to be accurate to 0.1F.

Sorry to hear that. Someone unplugged my chiller and cooked my 5 year old 500GL SPS few months back. Only few colonies survived.
