newbie's first shroom propagation

after reading most of the threads in this forum, yesterday i tried to propagate some shroom:

i put them in my sump, there is a philips daylight lamp (1040lm, 58lm/w) above the sump. do you think the lighting is enough?

how long do i have to wait them untill they attach to the gravel?

I have no idea on your light as I'm not familiar with the spec numbers you mention.

but if all goes well and no deaths due to secondary infections, etc should be 1-2 weeks before attachment.

I think your mushroom frags will be just fine, counting on your water flow through the sump is not too high. Good luck and enjoy your future propping ventures!

Thanx guys, the water flow in the sump isn't too high, it has been three days snow, looks like none of them has dead.

is it OK to open the net after 2 weeks?

I would a bit and test to see how they are doing. Then maybe put them back into the tank.

It's hard to tell from the pictures. Do the containers have holes so the water flows through the container?

If yes, good because there is some flow and water exchange. But, the way you have your rubble laid out, the flow will likely cause the mushrooms to fall off the little perches you set them on and settle or bunch up in the same places in your containers.

If no, then I think you should be have the top of the container under water to try to get some flow in there.

Normally, a mushroom will affix within 7 to 10 days. They will even attach to grains of sand (if that was all you had in your container). In the future, if you use that container, I would go for much smaller pieces of rubble (perhaps laying on some sand). That way, no matter what the flow is the mushrooms will stay at about the height throughout the container.

Once the mushroom attaches to anything (even grains of sand), then you have a surface you can use to glue it to something else.

As far as lighting, mushrooms will attach and grow in little to no light. From my experience, strong lighting just makes them grow and reproduce faster.

Since mushrooms are so hardy, I'll bet most of your frags will attach.

Best of luck,

Roy

Sweet.

Now you can break off the excess rubble to use the next time you frag some more.

After mine have attached, I usually put the new frags on the sand bed on the bottom of my main tank. They usually hang out there until the next swap, etc. People always appreciate a mounted mushroom over a loose one at a Swap.

If you want to spread them around your tank, you can either set, or glue, the piece of rubble on to your rock work.

Did all of them attach? If not, just give those that didn't a few more days.

Congratulations,

Roy

How are they doing? How long does it take them to round out and take shape after slicing them up? I just finished my first try tonight, man what a gooey, slimey job.

Buckeye, I've seen some of them round out in 24-48 hours. Others take longer. I think it depends on how clean and quick the cut was.

Did you cut them from the "stem" or slice pieces off like a toadstool? It's hard to tell...

Oh, btw, I like the little thing you used to hold the rubble with the fragged mushrooms in, did you make it or did you buy it. If so where, or out of what? What screening did you use?

Thanks! :P

I've heard of people taking pieces off of it like leathers, but I dont know how successful that is. What we do is slice the head off from the stem (think cutting a flower off of its stem) leaving a bit behind. That little bit turns into another mushroom. Then I take the head and divide it into 3-4 (or more, depending on how big the mushroom was to behind with) pizza slices trying to get a bit of the mouth in each piece.

I dont know specifically what was used, but gladware containers are wonderful for just that purpose as well.

Can you do this with all types of mushrooms or just ricordea's? And can you leave the fragged piece in your main tank?

Thank you!

What a great idea! You get to eat the brownies, then make mushroom frags which you can sell to buy more brownies! Brilliant!

This method will work with any mushroom-type coral or false anemones. You can indeed cut each mushroom in half or in quarters, as each piece will reform into a new mushroom. However there is always a chance of secondary bacterial infections which can set in and cause a massive slime out in a closed system such as a frag tray. The method is also practical for any coral that may "blow away" in a system before it takes hold.
Good work
