well I was like you changing from DSB to SSB to BB but I still did not like how my tank looked. Well what I did was went with a SSB and just let the tank do its thing. I lowered my feeding habits and kept up on my water changes. The only thing I would recommened is setup up a good maintance routine and stick with it. The corals will color up as time goes buy but it take time.

In a BB system a remote Dsb is not recommended.
What it really comes down to is this: What kind of money you want to spend on equiptment- BB will require more flow to keep all detirus suspended untill it gets skimmed out.
What kind of flow you want to have-in a System with sand you cant have too much flow or you will be constantly stirring up the sand, while in a BB you can go hog nuts on the flow!
What is your goal for this tanks lifetime- A Dsb in most cases only lasts for +/- 2 years untill the sandbed can not hold any more and it will begin to pollute your tank.
BB tanks never have the problem of being polluted by a full sand bed so it has a longer success rate and I havent heard stories of BB's crashing if they are setup right.

Why don't you start out BB and see how things go ?
You can always add the sand bed later if you have another tank to house things in while your in the process.

It is not binary.
It's an old numbers problem (used to be used in IQ tests)>

The previous 2 numbers added together become the third number.
1+1=2, 1+2=3, 2+3=5 etc.
The next number in his string is 18.

Sean

To me that sounds like the perfect candidate for Barebottom.

Actually, I believe the next number in the sequence is 21.

I have just recently set up my 100gal BB and I am very happy. I will say this, without a sand bed you don't have a lot of room for mistakes. If you don't have enough flow you will watch your food sit on the bottom and rot. It has been perfect me, because I am kind of a neat nick and so it drives me nuts and causes me to keep up on my maintenance. If you are not that type of person though, it might seem like more work then it is worth.

In my experience you don't want to go overboard with a return pump. It seems that microbubbles become a problem with too much flow through your overflows. I matched mine to my skimmer, so my skimmer gets 1200gph and my return gets the same.

I would probably go with a mag12 or mag18 depending on how much head pressure you have. Those pumps are built really well and pump alot of water for the price.

Keep in mind that you can only pump what your overflow can handle. I recommend Ocean runner or Eheim pumps. Don't buy a mag drive, the screws rust and the pump jams often.
